Modern Indian history is incomplete with the mention of the name APJ Abdul Kalam, scientist, teacher, statesman and above all a great human being. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam better known as A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was the 11th and the most loved President of India. Though he was a scientist who made our country proud with his missile defence programme his favourite job was ‘teaching’.

On July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture at the IIM Shillong, Kalam fell down suffering a stroke and passed away. In 2010, taking in consideration his love for students and focus on promoting education, the United Nations declared his birthday as ‘World Student’s Day’.

On 87th birth anniversary of former president APJ Abdul Kalam, fondly known as India’s ‘Missile Man’, several celebreties and politicians took to twitter to recognise his contributions to the nation.

Abdul Kalam, who was born on October 15 1931, contributed to the world of science and humanity.

He was born and raised in Rameswaram,Tamil Nadu, and studied physics and aerospace engineering.

He came to be known as the ‘Missile Man of India’ for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.

In 2002, Abdul Kalam became the 11th President of India.

Fondly recognized as the ‘People’s President’, he was honoured with prestigious awards such as Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, and Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest-civilian award.

APJ Abdul Kalam’s last words 

Kalam died on 27 July 2015 at IIM Shillong while delivering a lecture to students. His last words reportedly were to his long-time aide Srijan Pal Singh “Funny guy! Are you doing well?”

In a long Facebook post three years ago, Singh penned a heartfelt tribute to his mentor, reliving the minutes before after his sudden death due to cardiac arrest.
