National Press Day is celebrated across the country on 16 November 2013. The day is symbolic of a free and responsible press in India. We all know that media is the fourth pillar of any democracy. But journalists face abuse and threat to their life on daily basis. This profession has become one of the dangerous jobs in current times and journalists are perhaps the most unsafe bunch of people.
Here is a list of 10 journalists who were mercilessly murdered.
Dharmendra Singh, Killed in 2016
Dharmendra Singh, a journalist with the Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar, was shot dead by assailants in Bihar’s Rohtas’ Amra Talab area. He used to write frequently on local stone chips mafia and had received several threats.
He was working for the local edition of Hindi newspaper, Dainik Bhaskar. Dharmendra is survived by his wife and three children.
Journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, Killed in 2002
He was the publisher of a local Hindi newspaper, Poora Sach (Complete Truth). He was murdered in 2002 for exposing the alleged rape case against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. But his hard work finally showed result when in August 2017 controversial Indian guru was found guilty of rape and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Indradev Yadav, Killed in 2016
Indradev Yadav, was returning home on his bike when assailants shot him three times. He was a journalist working for a Hindi news channel from Chatra in Jharkhand.
Rajdev Ranjan, Killed in 2016
He was a journalist working for the Hindi daily Hindustan (one of Bihar’s largest selling newspapers.) He was brutally shot twice on his head and chest from an extremely close range near Siwan’s railway station.
Kishore Dave, Killed in 2016
He was the bureau chief of a Gujarati newspaper in the town of Junagadh in Gujarat. He was found murdered at his workplace in August 2016. The journalist was killed while writing story.
Jagendra Singh, Killed in 2015
He was a freelance journalist used to run a page named Shahjahanpur Samachar on Facebook where he had written extensively against alleged cases of corruption and illegal mining by a Minister for Backward Classes Welfare during Akhilesh yadav’s Government.
He was burnt alive. In his dying declaration, Jagendra claimed that he was burnt by the local police at the behest of a minister. He said, “Why did they have to burn me?
Gauri Lankesh, Killed in 2017
Senior journalist, editor, and activist Gauri Lankesh was killed by assailants at the doorstep of her Bengaluru residence on the evening 5 September. She was shot in the head and chest by gunmen who arrived there by motorcycle. She was known for her criticism of right-wing and Hindu nationalists, including members of the BJP.
Gauri was the Editor of Gauri Lankesh Patrike. Her deathraised question of journalists safety in the country.

* OCTOBER 3, 2015: Hemant Yadav, was shot by bike-borne assailants in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district in October 2015.r Pradesh. Yadav used to work for the Hindi news channel TV 24.
* FEBRUARY 14, 2016, Tarun Mishra, Bureau Chief of Jan Sandesh Times, was murdered in broad daylight.
* Sandeep Kothari who was a freelance crime journalist exposed illegal mining and land grabbing. On June 20, 2015, he was abducted and was burnt alive. His autopsy showed he had been alive when he was burned and strangled also.
