The Vedas are most sacred Hindu Scripture that were composed between 1500 and 1000 B.C in the language of Sanskrit. It was only transmitted orally for a hundred years and eventually it was written down.
It is a collection of hymns and Vedas teach the highest truths ever known to man, and form the supreme authority of Hinduism. It is believed that Vedas were created by Lords for the welfare of mankind much before creation of man. There are four Vedas – Rig, Sama, Yajur and Atharva.
Here are some interesting facts about the oldest Veda i.e. Rigveda
Rig Veda is a the oldest text in any Indo-European language which has originated from early as 1700 BC.
The Rig Veda consists of 1,028 mantras/hymns. These are chanted to the Gods and the ‘Pancha Bhutani’ or the five natural forces namely ‘Prithvi (Earth), ‘Jal (Water), ‘Vayu’ (Wind), ‘Agni’ (Fire) and ‘Aakash’ (Sky).
Many verses of the Rig Veda are still relevant today and used as Hindu prayers and during rituals.
Rig Veda explains – how the world originated, the power of the Gods, advises on the way of living and ways to lead a peaceful and a prosperous life.
From 2000 BC till 1900, it was transmitted orally from generation to generation.
Lord Indra is the chief deity mentioned in the Rig Veda. The fire God known as Agni, the sky God known as Varuna, and the Sun God known as Surya were other main deities who were prominent in the Rig Veda.
Hymns of the Rig Veda concentrate on pleasing the main gods Indra, Agni, Surya and Varuna through ritual sacrifices.
