Eminent Indian writer, true conscience-keeper, journalist and former Rajya Sabha member Kuldip Nayar passed away in New Delhi on 23 August 2018 following a brief illness. He was 95.

A columnist, author, human right activist and ex-High commissioner of India to the United kingdom, he was an inspiration for generations, and a mentor to many reporters and editors over the years. He was among the first journalists to be jailed during the Emergency.

* Mr. Nayar was a Punjabi, but was originally born in Sialkot in 1923.

* When the Emergency was declared, Mr. Nayar was one of the first journalists to be put in jail.

* In his long career, he served as press information officer to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri and veteran Congress leader and Union Home Minister Govind Ballabh Pant.

* As a journalist, he worked with a range of news agencies and media organisations in India and was also the correspondent of The Times, London, for more than two decades.

* He was also the High Commissioner of India to the U.K. and nominated member of the Rajya Sabha.

* He wrote over a dozen books, and is best known for his works like: ‘Between the Lines’, ‘Scoop! – Inside stories from Partition to the present’, ‘Distant Neighbours: A tale of the Subcontinent’, among others.

* Nayar breathed his last at the Escorts Hospital at 12.30 a.m., and his cremation will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

* He is survived by his wife and two sons.
