After the shocking case of the gang-rape of a 17-year-old Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district came to light on Sunday, the police were able to nab the remaining two accused who were on the run.
With the latest arrests in the case, all the five men accused of raping the minor girl have been arrested, police told PTI. The teenager was allegedly raped by five men at Phulat village in Khatauli administrative area when she had gone out in the fields to collect fodder. The accused men had also filmed the incident and tried to blackmail her into keeping mum.
The brazen disregard for humanity and law on the part of the accused shows how entrenched the violent patriarchal notions have been engrained in them. The alleged rapists had overpowered the girl and took turns to rape her one by one, all the while making a video of the same.
The girl somehow reached home despite her injuries and narrated the horrific ordeal to her brother who then lodged a police complaint based on which the accused were arrested.
The incident brings to light the ever so fragile state of law and order in the district that witness communal riots in 2013 that saw over 60 deaths and displacement of thousands of people.
Despite an effort to crackdown on crime, the district has often reported cases of murder, rape and sporadic violence over the years and this incident again highlights how many sections of society in Muzaffarnagar are still unsafe and living in fear.
