The year 2018 was a good one for the Hindi film industry as it proved that only content is the King of Bollywood. The previous year saw the underdogs (Andhadhun, Tumbbad, Raazi) emerge the big winners and content reigned kind, making one more optimistic about what the next 365 days will look like for Hindi films. This year, too, looks promising for Bollywood with a range of upcoming releases, both small budget and large-scale. While there are biopics and political dramas in the lineup, watch out for some great historical films, too.

Uri: The Surgical Strike (Release: Jan 11)
Vicky Kaushal ruled hearts in 2018 with his performances in films like Raazi, Sanju and Manmarziyaan. This year he is set to woo audiences with his portrayal of an army officer in the film that is inspired from the surgical strikes on Pakistan in 2016 after the Uri base camp in Jammu was attacked. The film which also features Yami Gautam is directed by debutant Aditya Dhar.
The Accidental Prime Minister (Release: Jan 11)
Based on the book by the same name by Sanjaya Baru, adviser to former prime minister Manmohan Singh, the film chronicles Singh’s political journey. With Anupam Kher essaying Manmohan Singh, the first look posters had garnered widespread attention due to Kher’s uncanny resemblance to Singh. One of the highly anticipated releases of 2019, the political drama is expected to ruffle some feathers.
Thackeray (Release: January 23, 2019)
Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Amrita Rao
Based on the life of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, this Nawazuddin Siddiqui-Amrita Rao starrer carries Bollywood’s streak of biographical dramas into 2019.
Cheat India (Release Date: January 25)
The Soumik Sen directorial, starring Emraan Hashmi in the lead role, is about the scams that take place in the Indian education system. Emraan plays the role of a scamster who has a team of toppers writing exams for other candidates seeking admission in reputed educational institutions. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (Release date: January 25)
Kangana Ranaut’s much-awaited historical drama Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is all set to arrive in theaters on January 25 after much delay. Kangana plays the role of feisty Rani Laxmi Bai who takes on the East India Company. The movie marks the directorial debut of Kangana and also Bollywood debut of TV actor Ankita Lokhande. The synopsis of the film reads, “She fought for freedom 160 years ago. She fought with her head held high, She fought till she dropped, Yet, never gave up her pride, her motherland, her beloved, Jhansi! It’s time to salute India’s greatest warrior queen!”
Super 30 (Release: January 25)
In this biopic, Hrithik Roshan portrays Bihar-based mathematician and teacher Anand Kumar. Anand Kumar’s Super 30 institute is famous for picking 30 meritorious students from economically backward families every year and training them for the IIT-JEE. Directed by Vikas Bahl who was caught in the recent #MeToo storm, Super 30 is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Phantom Films.
Ek Ladki ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (Release: February 11)
The film will see father-daughter duo Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor sharing screen space for the first time. The trailer sends the impression the film revolves around family, and same sex love. The subject makes it a much awaited film this year. Also featuring Juhi Chawla and Rajkummar Rao, the film is directed by Shelly Chopra. Also Read: Awkward! Gully Boy (Release: February 14)
This musical drama directed by Zoya Akhtar features Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. The film is inspired by the real life stories of Mumbai-based street rappers Vivian Fernandes aka Divine and Naved Shaikh aka Naezy, known for their song Mere Gully Mein.
Luka Chuppi (Release date: March 1)
The latest heartthrob of the nation Kartik Aaryan will once again sprinkle his charm on the 70mm screen in Dinesh Vijan’s production Luka Chuppi. He will be romancing Kriti Sanon in the movie. Both the actors play TV reporters from Mathura in the film and the story travels from Mathura to Gwalior and Agra. The rom-com is directed by Laxman Utekar and also stars Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi and Vinay Pathak in pivotal roles. Kesari Release date: March 21
Based on the Battle of Saragarhi where 21 Sikhs fought against 10,000 Afghans in 1897, Kesari stars Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra. Akshay plays the role of Havildar Ishar Singh. It is helmed by Anurag Singh who has directed films like Jatt & Juliet and Punjab 1984 among others.
Kalank (Release: April 19)
Produced by Karan Johar, this big budget epic drama is said to be one of Johar’s dream projects. According to reports, the film which is set against partition and the independence struggle, was conceptualised by Johar and his father Yash Johar 15 years ago. Helmed by director Abhishek Varman, this could be one of the biggest releases this year. The ensemble cast with Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur makes this another anticipated film.
Student Of The Year 2 (Release: May 10)
The sequel to Karan Johar’s campus drama, Student of The Year 2 introduces Tara Sutaria and Chunky Panday’s daughter Ananya Panday. It also stars Tiger Shroff in the lead role and is directed by Punit Malhotra. Hollywood actor Will Smith will make a cameo appearance in the movie. He will be seen shaking a leg with the three lead actors.
Kabir Singh (Release: June 21)
Directed by Sandeep Vanga, the film is the official remake of Telugu hit Arjun Reddy. Starring Shahid Kapoor in the titular role, the film revolves around an alcoholic surgeon who heads down on a self-destructive path after his lover marries someone else. Kiara Advani also plays a key role in the film.
Batla House (Release Date: August 15)
ohn Abraham starrer Batla House is inspired by the real encounter that took place a decade ago on September 19, 2008. John essays the role of police officer Sanjay Kumar Yadav who led the Batla House encounter. While sharing the poster of the film, the actor wrote, “Encounters: 70 Cases: 33 Convictions: 22 Gallantry Awards: 9 Accusations: 1. When everything you’ve achieved could be wiped out in that one moment. The story of India’s Most Decorated/Controversial Cop.” Helmed by director Nikkhil, the film is written by Ritesh Shah.
Mission Mangal (Release: August 15)
Based on the real life story of women scientists behind ISRO’s successful Mangalyaan mission, the film features Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Kriti Kulhari and Sharman Joshi. It is directed by Jagan Shakti and produced by Padman director R. Balki.
Chhichhore (Release Date: August 30)
Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari has joined hands with Sajid Nadiadwala for his next film Chhichhore. It stars Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor in never-seen-before avatars. While the plot of the film is yet to be revealed, Nadiadwala called it a “riveting story of today’s generation” and Nitesh Tiwari said it’s a “timeless tale of time pass.”
Made In China (Release date: August 30)
Starring Rajkummar Rao and Mouni Roy as a married couple, Made In China is the story of a struggling businessman who takes bizarre ways of finding success. His wife (Mouni) encourages him to undertake the journey to China in hopes that it will make him a successful entrepreneur. Shot in Ahmedabad, the Dinesh Vijan production also stars Boman Irani.
Brahmastra (Release: December 20)
Announced as the first in a trilogy, director Ayan Mukherjee’s fantasy epic features Ranbir Kapoor in the lead. The cast also boasts of Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Dimple Kapadia and Mouni Roy. A major part of the film has been shot in the picturesque locations of Bulgaria.
