Avengers Endgame trailer: Suspense reloaded again but the top 4 secrets are here

The long-awaited trailer for Avengers 4 has finally been released, and with it our first look at what is sure to be 2019’s most talked-about movie. Let’s face it, Marvel could have gotten away with showing a LOT less than they did here – so, what did we learn from the trailer?

Avengers: Endgame

The closely-guarded secret that was the Avengers 4 title has been revealed, and it’s a popular guess. But it also isn’t plucked out of nowhere. This title isn’t a reference to any comics – specifically, it’s something that Doctor Strange tells Tony Stark moments before he disintegrates during Infinity War: “We’re in the endgame now.”

Strange had previously told Stark that he’d scanned the future and there was only one way to beat Thanos, so whatever we see in Endgame is sure to be what Strange was referring to. Let’s hope he had time to tell Tony how it went down in that possible future. And that someone can get to Tony to find out. Um, speaking of which…

Tony’s lost in space

The end of Avengers: Infinity War left us all wondering how an extremely shell-shocked Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) would make it back to Earth, and this trailer gives us the answer: he won’t. Or at least, he’s convinced he won’t. There’s a certain irony to Tony spending his last days trapped inside a metal box, but it can’t end there…can it? That recording he makes has all the hallmarks of being discovered well after his death.

But hey, whether he makes it back alive or dead, one theory is that Captain Marvel gives him a lift back to Earth. And sure, it’s unlikely that they’d just randomly bump into one another, but then again space did just get a lot less populated.

Thanos is doing okay

So, Thanos. You’ve just accomplished your goal of killing half the universe. What are you going to do next? Substance farming, it turns out. Not an unreasonable career choice for someone who was always worried about sustainability issues.

What interests us is how Thanos is going to be dragged back into this fight. Last we saw of the Infinity Stones, they appeared depleted, if not completely wrecked – will they be the key to reversing The Snap? Or is Thanos going to be mostly on the sidelines for this movie? The trailer’s telling us nothing concrete, but the fact that he’s in it at all suggests that we won’t be denied that rematch we’ve been hoping for.

If nothing else, let’s hope the Hulk gets to give Thanos the smashing he was previously spared.

The Avengers have a plan!

We don’t know exactly what Steve (Chris Evans) and Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) are discussing when they hope that it works – presumably, something that could reverse The Snap – but it’s good to know that they’ve got something in mind. They wouldn’t be the Avengers without something to avenge, after all.

If you’ve seen the leaked set pictures from the Avengers: Endgame shoot, you can maybe guess at what the plan might be, but if not, we’ve got a few questions… How did Scott Lang get out of the quantum realm? Given that time moves differently there, could he have spent long enough in that world to truly master its strange abilities? And does Captain America looking at a picture of Peggy Carter before he heads out on a mission symbolise something more than lost love?

And most importantly: do we really believe Cap would take time to shave off his beard in this situation?

Just a few things to think about…

Say hello to Ronin

Jeremy Renner is back! When Infinity War came out, fans wanted to know: where is Hawkeye? Well, now we have an answer: he was in Japan, and he’s wearing a new costume, sporting new weapons, and generally looking a lot cooler than you remember.

Comics fans will instantly recognise this as the outfit of Ronin, an identity Hawkeye once assumed in the comics. A ronin is, of course, a samurai without a master (as anyone who saw The Wolverine will remember). Is this Hawkeye undercover, or does it symbolise something more? Perhaps an attempt to stay under SHIELD’s radar?

As for his use of a sword, well, let’s just say while the Avengers were studying Thanos, perhaps he was off studying the blade. But in the comics, Hawkeye’s mentor (and surrogate father) was a guy called the Swordsman – is this just an easter egg for fans, or a nod to some Hawkeye backstory we have yet to see in the movies?

There’s a lot to think about, and only four months to think about it. We’ve only got one question unanswered: how long until the next Avengers: Endgame trailer?
