Who is Sandeep Singh, the Star Diljit Dosanjh Plays in ‘Soorma’?
Gulzar, one of the prolific writers, has penned down the lyrics for the upcoming film ‘Soorma’, a real-life story about hockey player Sandeep. Singh was born in 1986 in Kurukshetra, Haryana. His elder brother, Bikramjeet Singh, is a field hockey player too. He was popularly known as “Flicker Singh” for his legendary drag-flick on the field. In 2010, he was said to be the fastest drag-flicker in the world at 145km/hr!
Sandeep Singh was regarded as one of the most dangerous drag-flicker of his heydays in the world. Singh made his debut back in January 2004 in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia and helped India to win the Asia Cup the same year.
The 31-year-old drag-flick specialist – also known as ‘flicker Singh’ – was part of the Indian team that won silver in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Under his leadership, India won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup tournament after 13 years. And his 16-goal haul, including five in the final against France, propelled India into the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
A tragedy struck while he was on his way to Delhi to join the national team.
In 2006, during the week-long break before the World Cup in Germany, Singh was travelling by Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi Express for national camp, when he was shot by accident by a police personnel in the train. Sandeep was paralysed from waist down, and was told by the doctors that he was lucky to even sit on a wheelchair. Hockey, the doctors said were out of question. Luckily, Sandeep not only had the Indian Hockey Federation’s backup, who sent him abroad for treatment, he received full support from his elder brother, Bikramjit Singh who was a well-known hockey player himself.
With his sheer determination to get back on his feet he made a stunning comeback in 2008.
It took Sandeep Singh only two years to stage a comeback, and what a memorable comeback it turned out to be. Singh played so well post his return, that the federation made him Team India captain in 2009 and the rest, as they say, is history.
Singh’s life-threatening incident is what makes the Soorma movie’s story even more inspiring.
