Kailash Kher was born on 7 July 1973 in Meerut to a Kashmiri Pundit family and spent most of his childhood in Delhi.
Kailash Kher learned music from his childhood. Kailash Kher was brought up in a musical atmosphere, and from his school days, he was chanted and fascinated by music and used to listen to his father’s Indian folks songs all day. He started learning classical music from the age of twelve. He was inspired by legendary Pakistani Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
At the age of 7-8, Kher left home in search of a guru (teacher)or an institution to further his musical training. He learned music from around 15 teachers. During his struggling days, he spends many nights on the street of Mumbai. He also attended music classes and would teach the same to students for just Rs. 150 per session to maintain himself, taking care of all his personal expenses from lodging to food, plus his education and music expenses.
Padma Shri Award
Singer Kailash Kher, who shot to fame with the 2003 hit number Allah ke bande, has been conferred India’s fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, on Thursday.
He received the recognition by President Pranab Mukherjee for his contribution to music in the country. “By the grace of God, I got this honour. It’s a moment of pride and celebration. It’s because of a lot of prayers and hard work along with the blessing from my parents and gurus, and love from fans,” Kailash said.

Well, while the initial struggle he had asked his mother some money to buy a Tanpura. When after 2 or 3 years he got the money from his mother he was indebted so much that he couldn’t buy the instrument. The money went in his basic expenses. So, his dream of impressing his mother by singing to her from the Tanpura simply got away with the wind. This is why the singer is emotionally attached to the song.
