Mersal (English: Zapped) is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film. Directed by Atlee and co-written by Atlee, K. V. Vijayendra Prasad and S. Ramana Girivasan (dialogues). The film stars Vijay in triple roles with Samantha, Nithya Menon, and Kajal Aggarwal playing the female lead roles. The background score and soundtracks were composed by A. R. Rahman, while the cinematography was done by G. K. Vishnu and edited by Ruben.
There is no doubt that the film is super popular in the south, in India it has released in 2500 screens and had recorded and earning of 31.3 million on its opening day.
SYNOPSIS: The story of Mersal unfurls in three different time periods, in which Vijay plays three different characters, a doctor, a magician and a village leader from Madurai. In this action thriller film, a magician and a doctor attempt to solve a healthcare threat that is looming large over the country and in the process expose the corruption of the Indian medical industry.

‘Mersal’ has been in the news for a while now. First there was the row over the use of the title, then there was the one over the regulation of ticket prices and finally, once the movie released, its woes continued with the protest by the doctors, and the latest, by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit for its dialogues referring to The Goods and Services Tax and Digital India. However, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, senior party leader P Chidambaram, DMK working president M K Stalin, veteran star Kamal Haasan and a host of Tamil cinema industry representatives have come out in support.
This is not the only controversy the film is facing even the doctors down South have also raised an objection to the way doctors are portrayed in the film. As per reports, IMA has launched a protest on the dialogue for doctors in the film.
The film began production in February 2017 with actors Sathyaraj, S. J. Surya and Vadivelu amongst others in supporting roles. It is also the 100th production of Thenandal Studios Limited. The film was released worldwide on 18 October 2017, coinciding with Diwali. The Telugu dubbed version Adirindhi is slated for release on 9 November 2017.
