Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot in a western and a Hindu wedding ceremony at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. Their wedding has been a coming together of two cultures, and this was reflected in their celebrations as well.
After a section of social media users cracked down on the use of firecrackers at the wedding celebrations of Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra and American singer Nick Jonas in Jodhpur, now animal rights organisation PETA has accused the newlywed couple of animal cruelty.
The official Twiter handle of PETA India on Monday raised a concern about the use of horses and elephant at their nuptials and wrote, “Dear Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. Elephants for weddings live in chains and horses are controlled with whips, spiked bits. People are rejecting elephant rides and having horse-free weddings. Congrats, but we regret it was not a happy day for animals.”
The post was backed by a video titled ‘Band Baaja Brutality’ and showcased what horses have to go through when they are used at weddings.

In a statement given to IANS by the CEO of PETA India Dr. Manilal Valliyate, he said, “Priyanka has been ill-served by not being advised of the firestorm that would be caused by participating in animal abuse. It doesn’t make a person look big or glamorous to promote cruelty to animals who have no choice but to serve. It makes them look small. Overwhelmingly, these days PETA is delighted to see so many celebrities feel passionately about protecting animals.”
Before this, Priyanka was trolled by the social media users for using fireworks at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan
The newlywed couple also drew the ire of social media users who pointed out the use of crackers soon after they exchanged vows. Apparently, on Diwali, the actress had urged people not to burn crackers and contribute in making the planet pollution free and Priyanka who herself lit up the sky on the night of December 1.
Netizens pointed at “double standards” as around Diwali this year, Priyanka, who is asthmatic herself, had urged people to follow the ‘Less pollution, more laddoos’ policy for the festival of fights.
They have scheduled a reception in New Delhi on Tuesday evening.
