And finally the wait is over as Zero is finally here in cinemas. Fans have waited for the movie with bated breaths ever since Shahrukh Khan’s character was first revealed. The movie involves A-list actors, respectable performers cast as extras, a swooning Ajay-Atul score and cameos by Bollywood royalty.
Setting the scene
The story is that of Bauua Singh, a 39-year-old vertically challenged man from Meerut. He is a fan of Bollywood actress Babita Kumari played by Katrina Kaif and frolics around with his friends, being a fun nuisance in the neighbourhood. However, it suddenly comes to light that he also has a mysterious romantic past.
Bauua Singh, the man from Meerut who makes up for his lack of height with a flair of character, meets Aafiya, a space scientist with cerebral palsy played by Anushka Sharma. Initially a mismatch, the two get along well and fall in love under strange circumstances. However, a wheelchair-bound girlfriend is not good enough for Bauua, whose ego takes hold of him after a chance encounter with his on-screen dream girl Babita Kumari. Off he goes to Mumbai to get the girl that the entire country covets. But after a while, he comes to realise his mistake and tries to win Aafiya back. But now the stakes are much much higher and Bauua must go through the most gruesome physical, mental and emotional challenges to win his lady love back. Whether he succeeds in his task, what hardships does he go through and how it alters him as a person makes up for the rest of the tale.
Cameo of Sridevi
Directed by Aanand L. Rai, Zero has a cameo by Sridevi and it’ll make you teary-eyed. Without spoiling her cameo, the scene happens minutes before interview when the timeless beauty and powerhouse of talent meets the vertically-challenged SRK.
Shubhra Gupta of Indian Express wrote, “The trouble with Zero is not just that the mini-me SRK is just SRK minus the inches. Every twitch is familiar: the tousled hair, commonplace air, the regular joe who wears ‘kachcha-banian’. The bigger trouble is that the film doesn’t quite know what to do with its characters once it has them.”
“A great concept needs an equally skillful execution, but not every good story gets the treatment it deserves. Zero has a story with an interesting and inspiring concept that doesn’t hold back with its outrageousness,” writes another reviewer at the Times of India.
A review by Swetha Ramakrishnan of Firstpost said, “Despite its inherently pleasing quality, spot on performances (special shout out to Tigmanshu Dhulia and Zeeshan Aayub), cameos by several celebrities and chuckle some one-liners, Zero falls prey to the second-half curse.”
Clearly, the trio Shahrukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif have made their presence felt with brilliant performance in the film. Zero seems to be all about Shahrukh Khan’s charm, Anushka Sharma’s acting and Katrina Kaif’s sassy avatar.
