The colors you see every day can affect you emotionally, physically and psychologically. Some colors can relax and calm you after a tough day, while others can trigger stress. Worldwide, blue is the favorite color for decorating and clothing. However, experts say that people should incorporate the color green into their lives. Here are four reasons why:
- Enhances vision – Your eyes translate light into colors. The human
The color green, which is a mixture of blue and yellow, is located at about 550 nanometers, making it the easiest for the retina to perceive. Since green is near the middle of the color spectrum, it enhances the blue and red colors at the opposite ends, making them easier to see.
identifies colors between 400 and 700 nanometers, with blue at the lowest and red at the highest end of the color spectrum.
- Boosts appetite – Vegetation, such as grass, trees, plants and bushes, produce cells containing chlorophyll. During a process called photosynthesis, chlorophyll converts sunlight into energy to help vegetation grow, produce leaves and create seeds, flowers or fruits. Chlorophyll absorbs light waves at both ends of the spectrum and reflects the green color we see in the leaves and stems.
Some plants initially produce green fruit, such as bananas and peppers. As the chlorophyll molecule breaks down, the fruit ripens and turns other colors.
- Stimulates healthy living – Researchers at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health studied the life expectancy and mental health of 100,000 women. They discovered that women who lived near green spaces had a 12 percent lower than those living in locations with fewer plants and greenery. The scientists concluded that green spaces provided more opportunities for participants to socialize outdoors, which benefitted their mental health.
- Relaxes mind and body – Color experts say that green is a soothing and refreshing color. It signifies health and life, which is why many offices and health care facilities incorporate shades of green into their décor.
