Yama and Yamuna, the two children of Surya loved each other dearly. But Yama remained so busy in maintaining discipline and order in Yamaloka that he could never visit his sister at her house. Once, Yamuna came to meet him. Yamaraj was so delighted to see her that he granted her a wish. The day was ‘Kartik Shukla Dwitiya’ and the Yamuna requested Yamaraj to excuse all the people who bathe in the Yamuna on this day. Yamaraj granted the wish and since then, bathing in the Yamuna became significant on this day. The Yamuna also cooked a variety of delicious food for Yamaraj and a grand festival took place in Yamaloka. Hence, this day is celebrated as the ‘Yamadwitiya’.
