One of the most anticipated and lively festivals in India, Sri Ganesha Chaturthi is dedicated to the beloved elephant-headed god, Ganesha. He is the younger son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He is honoured at the start of rituals and ceremonies as he’s considered the God of beginnings. Ganesh Chaturthi brings people of all religion, caste and creed together.
We celebrate this 10-day-long festival every year. In 2018, it will be celebrated on the 13th September 2018, Thursday.
Most of us know that we are not supposed to look at the moon in the sky on Ganesh Chaturthi. Why is moon sighting prohibited on this special day? Let us go into the interesting story behind this reason
According to mythology, on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the Bhadrapad month, Lord Ganesha was returning home with the mouse, moon god Chandra began to laugh aloud and commented on his belly and the tiny mouse. In order to teach the moon a lesson, Lord Ganesha cursed him that no light would ever fall on him. Thus, the moon disappeared in the skies..
Later Lord Ganesha modified the curse and said that the moon would undergo regular waxing and waning to remind him to be humble and hence the once glorious and proud, brightly shining moon became dark and lustreless and is seen only twice in its full form in the sky.
He relieved Moon God from the curse but with a clause. Human beings can look at the moon on any day in the year but not on the day of ‘Bhadrapada Chaturthi’.
The Lord also added that anyone seeing the moon on the 4th day (Chaturthi) of the Bhadrapada month would be blamed for something which they did not do and face unjust criticism.
According to Puranic legends, Lord Krishna was once accused of stealing a precious gem ‘Syamantaka’. After seeing the plight of Lord Krishna, Sage Narada informed him that he had sighted the moon of Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi and hence he has been accused of stealing the gem. On Narada’s advice, Lord Krishna observed a fast on Ganesh Chaturthi to get rid of Mithiya Dosha.
What if you look at the Moon by mistake on that day? Here is a remedy!
Those who worship Lord Ganesha and fulfill the holy rituals and listen to or recite the story of Ganesha Chaturthi can be relieved.
The actual lesson here is to lose arrogance and stay humble.
One must not go by external appearances however beautiful they are and one must not insult anyone basing on physical features or anything else.
Mithya Dosha Prevention
If anyone sights the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi then to get rid of Mithya Dosha he/she is advised to chant the following mantra:
सिंहः प्रसेनमवधीत्सिंहो जाम्बवता हतः। सुकुमारक मारोदीस्तव ह्येष स्यमन्तकः॥
Simhah Prasenamavadhitsimho Jambavata Hatah।।
Sukumaraka Marodistava Hyesha Syamantakah॥
Wish you a Happy and a Blessed Ganesh Chaturthi 2018!
