“Mahabharata” means the Great story of “Bharata” and there are many versions and retelling of the epic. Bhima, A Pandu was powerful and strong character in Mahabharata. He was very well trained in physical combat, military arts and was responsible for slaying all hundred Kaurava brothers in the Kurukshetra War.
But how many of you know about Bhima’s first wife Hidimbi who was a rakshasi ( A demoness)? Her selflessness contributed a lot to Pandavas victory against the Kauravas.
Today, we will tell you about the love story of Bhim & Hidimba which is a story of sacrifice, belief and mutual understanding that we can easily relate to today.
Who was Hidimbi?
Hidimbi was a rakshasi, who used to live in the jungle with her brother, Hidimba. Her brother tortured the villagers and killed people for food. But his sister Hidimbi was kind at heart and wanted to save the villagers from her brother’s wrath
How and where did she meet Bhima?
When Pandavas went to a forest during exile, they reached at the part of the forest where a demon named Hidimb and his sister Hidimba lived. Kunti and four of the Pandavas were fell asleep but Bhima was awake to protect them.
Demon Hidimb sensed the smell of human beings and immediately asked Hidimba to go after them. When Hidimba reached there she saw the handsome Bhima and fell in love with him.
She took the form of a beautiful woman and went to Bhima. She confessed to him about her real identity and told him that her brother is a demon who wants eat all of them.
Surprisingly Bhima smiled and replied, “Don’t worry, he would defeat her brother.
After Bhim Killed Hidimb, She asked Bhima to marry her
Hidimba did not return for a long time, so, Hidimb went looking for her. After reaching there he saw her talking to Bhima. He became angry and attacked Bhima. A big fight followed and ended with Bhima killing Hidimb.
After Hidimb death Hidimbi was orphaned as she had no one else. She asked Bhima to marry her.
Bhima married her with the permission of his mother Kunti but on one condition. He told her that he would not take Hidimba along with him after his exile period ends.
Hidimba agreed to it and within a year, Hidimbiconciieved a son for Bhima and named him Ghatotkacha. He was raised by his mother only and fought in the battle of Kurukshetra where he stood by his father.
Her sacrifice & contribution
Hidimbi selflessly chose to live in the forests and raised Ghatotkacha single-handedly. Her dedication, loyalty and sacrifice make her unique. Hidimbi probably is the forgotten queen of the Mahabharata but she will always remain an integral part of the epic.
