According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Vishnu is one of the Hindu Trinity (Three Supreme Gods). In Hindu religion, Lord Vishnu is also known as ‘Protector’ of the universe. Whenever the world is in danger he saves the world from evil forces. Lord Vishnu has ten incarnations and his first incarnation was Matsya Avatar.
But why did Lord Vishnu take Avatar for the first time? Why did he think of taking an incarnation? He wanted to save the world from which sin? And why he decided to become a fish? We are going to give you all the answers in this article. We will tell you the story of the fate of Matsya Avatar of Lord Vishnu. If you look at the mythological stories related to this incarnation of Matsya then you will find that this incarnation is of semi-god and semi-fish. Lord Vishnu took this avatar when there the world was going to end.
Satyayuga was on the verge of ending and a terrible flood was about to come to start new Yuga. Lord Brahma was tired of creating a day, therefore he wanted to sleep. When Brahma was sleeping, Asur Haygreev appeared from the nose of Lord Brahma. Asur Haygreev thought that Lord Brahma is sleeping and it is the right time to take knowledge of the Vedas. He concentrated his attention and took all knowledge of the Vedas. Then he went into the depths of the sea thinking that no one would find him there. When Lord Vishnu came to know this, he became very worried because if the Vedas were stolen by Asurs/demons then Veda’s knowledge would not be able to go into the next era. Being the protector, it was the responsibility of Lord Vishnu to pass the knowledge of Vedas to next era.
When Lord Vishnu saw Satyavrat Manu, he realized that this person can save the Vedas now. Satyavrat Manu was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. One day when Satyavrat Manu was worshiping near the river. He took water in both his hands and devoted water to Lord Vishnu while praying. He heard a voice from his hand, “O great king, do not throw me in the river again”. Manu started looking at his hand and he saw a small fish.
The fish started looking at Manu and prayed “Do not flush me again in water, there are many big fishes in this water & they will swallow me”. Manu looked at the fish with kindness. As a king, it was his duty to protect every living being. King agreed and put fish in his kamandal. Manu left home for rest.
The next day the fish became so big that it had to be kept in a big pond. The next day fish again changed its size and became larger. At that time Manu asked the fish that you are an extraordinary fish, your shape is growing rapidly. Tell me who are you?
Lord Vishnu appeared and said a catastrophe will come after 7 days from today; I have taken this Avatar to protect the universe. I want you to make a big boat: Keep all kinds of seeds, males and females of every creature & Seven Sages along with their family, so that work of creation could start again.
Then the fish went to the other side of the ocean to complete its avatar. He saw that Haygreev was protecting the Vedas. The fish hit him before he could think of something. That fish was so huge that Asur died after struggling for some time. As soon as Asur died, the fish drank the Vedas and went to Brahma, who was still sleeping.
On the other side Manu had prepared the boat. He had brought his family along with seven sages. Suddenly it started raining and the level of water started rising. After a while the flood came. The boat started to wobble but Manu and others were determined that Lord Vishnu would protect them. Only then, according to the promise, the fish came over and said, “Use Vasuki as a rope and tie the boat with my horns”.
Fish taught knowledge of Vedas to Manu and other creatures during the journey. As soon as the storm ended, everything had been destroyed on earth. The fish left the boat on the snowy mountain and from there a new era was started.
