The mother of all cows (Surabhi) started giving birth to many cows who started flooding Kailash with milk. Shiva became very furious at this and used his third eye to destroy many of them.

All Gods then sought to offer Nandi (the son of Surabhi & Kasyapa) the magnificent bull to Lord Shiva.

During Samudra Manthan, the ocean of the milk was being churned by the devas and asuras order to obtain ‘Amrit’. A poisonous substance known as ‘Halahala’ came from the seas and started to killing both Gods and Demon

All ran to God Brahma who then requested Lord Shiva to help. Shiva consumed the poison to save the world. Immediately goddess Parvati stopped the poison in his throat, making his throat blue. Since then, he is known as ‘Viskantha’ and ‘Neelkantha’.
