In Hindu mythology, Lord Indra had incredible powers. He was the controller and could bring forth thunder and rain at his will.
Do you know why Lord Indra was called God or Deva with ‘sahastrayoni’. Or that Lord Indra was cursed for lust! How did Lord Indra grow 1000 vaginas on his body? Well it has a long story.
We will share the mythology behind the curse of Lord Indra.
Lord Brahma created some beautiful women, among whom, Ahalya was the best, possessing the highest virtues.
Then Brahma placed her in the care of Rishi Gautam until she reached puberty. Brahma started thinking about Ahalya’s marriage as she was very beautiful and had attracted the attention of all the Devas and Asuras (devils) by then. Ahalya was the symbol of purity and virtue and possessed the greatest qualities of mankind.
Indra was obsessed with Ahalya
He used to come near Sage’s ashram and gaze at Ahalya’s beauty. He observed Sage Gautam carefully and became aware of his daily routine.
Rishi Gautam used to leave his ashram at the dawn and meditate at the Riverside.
Indra took Rishi Gautam’s form and seduced Ahalya
One day Indra assumed the voice of a cock, and with its voice sage woke up thinking that the morning had come. He went to the river to take bath and meditate.
The moment Gautam left, Indra entered the hut after taking Rishi’s form and made love to Ahalya who surrendered herself to her apparent husband. It is believed that during the course she realized that the man with her was not Sage Gautam but Lord Indra.
Lord Indra developed 1000 vaginas on his body
Indra was about to leave but in the meantime the real Gautama returned from his bath. Rishi cursed his Ahalya, Moon and Indra.
Gautam gave Indra a curse that Lord Indra’s body will be covered with a thousand female marks/Vaginas so that the world is aware of Indra’s indecent thoughts. This is why, Lord Indra’s body was covered with thousand female organs. Ahalya was cursed by Gautama and she changed into a stone.
Lord Indra’s body covered with vaginas later turned into eyes
Indra’s was ashamed of himself and stayed in darkness and seclusion as he could never appear before men or women.
Seeing his deplorable condition, the Gods became concerned and asked Brahma or help. Brahma pleaded to Lord Shiva and earned the grace of Shiva. Thus, the organs all over his body were transformed into eyes. Since then he came to be regarded as the thousand-eyed god.
