Lord Krishna died after the Great Mahabharata War. There are many arguments about Krishna’s death.

There are many legends and stories in our society about Krishna’s death. As per religious scriptures, there is only one story of Krishna’s death.

Curse of Gandhari

When Duryodhana was killed, his mother Gandhari was devastated. She mourned over the remains of Duryodhana.

Lord Krishna and the Pandavas also reached there. She was shaking and her anger was uncontrollable.

At the death of her 100 sons, Gandhari said “Shouldn’t you(Lord Krishna) have averted this war with your divine power? Is this what you do to your creation?

Gandhari cursed Lord Krishna that “may you die in 36 years from today.” May Dwaraka be flooded and every one of Yadava kin perish by killing each other just as you made the kins of Kuru kill one another.”

She further added, “Since the Yadavas cannot be killed by any other race, they will die at each other’s hands.”

The end of the Yadav Clan

The Yadavas were a prospering clan but with time they became intoxicated with the power. They got indulged in all kinds of fights among the brother which resulted in wars. Yadavas killed each other in the battlefield and even Pradyumna, the son of Lord Krishna was also killed.

Seeing the destruction, the Lord decided to leave Dwaraka and go into the forests. Krishna after seeing the destruction decided to entrusted the Yadava women to Arjuna. He then left Dwaraka,  a huge wave splurged up from the oceans and swallowed the city.

Krishna decided to meditate in the forest and sat on the ground. A hunter named Jara assumed Krishna’s foot to be a body part of a deer, and shot Krishna with his arrow. Krishna fell down but forgave hunter for his mistake. Krishna’s soul left the body and went to heaven.
