How did Aadhaar helpline sneak into your mobile? The UIDAI's helpline number is being randomly saved by default in many Android phones. Check Your Phone Now! Who Is Pushing UIDAI Helpline Number On Your Phones?

The Unique Identification Authority of India or UIDAI has found itself in fresh controversy.  Many people were shocked to find that UIDAI’s toll-free number — 1800 300 1947 — was mysteriously stored as a contact on their phones.

What is more puzzling is that this was regardless of whether they had linked their Aadhaar or not, or even had an Aadhaar number in the first place.

French security expert Elliot Alderson took to Twitter to ask UIDAI, “Many people, with different providers, with and without an #Aadhaar card, with and without the mAadhaar app installed, noticed that your phone number is predefined in their contact list by default without their knowledge. Can you explain why?”

Within hours, many people posted screenshots and confirmed it was indeed the case for Android phones, even as they questioned the protocol through which the UIDAI number got into their phonebooks without their explicit consent.

On Twitter, people raised this concern to the authority and asked how the number was saved on their phones!

UIDAI’s response came after people on social media questioned why the number was being saved by default in people’s contact list on Android phones.

This news comes a few days after TRAI chief’s Aadhaar dare created a flutter, and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) asked people not to share publicly their 12-digit identifier on Internet and social media, or pose such challenges to others.

According to UIDAI, the valid Toll free number is 1947!

Google says it ‘inadvertently’ added UIDAI helpline number in Android version given to Indian manufacturers in 2014

“Our internal review has revealed that in 2014, the then UIDAI helpline number and the 112 distress helpline number were inadvertently coded into the SetUp wizard of the Android release given to OEMs [Original Equipment Manufacturers] for use in India and has remained there since. Since the numbers get listed on a user’s contact list, these get transferred accordingly to the contacts on any new device,” clarified a Google spokesperson.

“We would like to assure everyone that this is not a situation of an unauthorised access of their Android devices. Users can manually delete the number from their devices,” he said, adding that this issue would be fixed in the upcoming version of SetUp wizard.
