haratiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from North West Delhi Lok Sabha seat and famous Punjabi folk singer Hans Raj Hans said on Friday that he will file a defamation suit against AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal for maligning his image.
Hans Raj Hans’ statement came a day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged that Hans Raj Hans had converted to Islam and can’t contest the Lok Sabha election from a reserved seat (North West Delhi). AAP had also said that it will move court to get Hans Raj Hans disqualified.
Hans Raj Hans refused the charge and said he would have been ousted by his own family if he had converted his religion.
Responding to the allegations, Hans Raj Hans said, “Jhoote aadmi ne phir jhoot bola. Gandagi ki paribasha ko ujagar karne wale shakshiyat ko dekhna hai toh vo Kejriwal hai. Defamation ka case karenge aur SC/ST ka Act lagaenge [The liar has yet again lied. Arvind Kejriwal is the one who gives a light to the definition of filth. We will file a defamation case and add SC/ST Act].”
“I was born in a Valmiki family and my mother worships saint Valmiki. She would have killed me had I converted to Islam,” Hans Raj Hans said. Hans said he was deeply hurt by the accusations of AAP leaders, including Kejriwal, and will take a legal action against them.
The AAP has accused Hans of allegedly converting to Islam in 2014, and said he cannot contest the general election from the North West Delhi reserved seat.
“The BJP has given ticket to a person who is not from a reserved category. He has hidden many facts. On February 20, 2014, he converted to Islam. He converted to Mohammad Yusuf. He had also told that he converted his religion, but he will continue to sing under the same name,” Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam said on Thursday.
Later in the day, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also tweeted: “Hans Raj Hans is ineligible to fight from a reserved seat. He will finally be declared ineligible. Voters from North West Delhi shud not waste their votes on him.”
The BJP has, however, rubbished the allegations. Demanding an apology for the allegations on Hans Raj Hans, BJP senior leader Vijay Goel, said, “Hans Raj Hans is a Valmiki’ and he has an SC certificate. People who are jealous of his popularity and since he sings Sufi, they are spreading lies.”
The elections in Delhi are scheduled to take place on May 12 in the sixth phase. In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, the BJP had won all the seven seats from the national capital.
