Humanity Shamed again! A horrific video of a woman in Assam being stripped, attacked and had chilli powder stuffed in her private parts by a group of people has gone viral on social media platforms.
According to a report by NDTV, the incident occurred in a tribal village along the Assam-Mizoram border on September 10. The incident came to light after a video of the incident went viral on the social media on Friday. It was only from the video that the number of attackers was revealed.
“A police team raided Magura, a remote tribal village on the Assam-Mizoram border at 5 a.m. today (Saturday) and arrested the 19. They include three who appear prominently in the video and are directly involved,” Karimganj Superintendent of Police Gaurav Upadhyay told The Hindu.
“The incident took place on September 10 in a very remote tribal area under Nagra outpost along the Assam-Mizoram border. We came to know of it only after the video was circulated and registered a case,” said Karimganj superintendent of police Gaurav Upadhyay.
The victim did not approach the police but filed a case in the court of the Karimganj chief judicial magistrate on Saturday after seeing the video, he said.
After registering the case in the afternoon, a police party visited the village and initiated a probe into the incident.
The woman has not identified anyone as her attacker. “The group of villagers, who attacked her, included women. She was also stripped and attacked. We have started our investigation and we will take action as per law,” Upadhyay said.
The police will also book under the IT Act those who made video recording of the incident and circulated it in the social media, he said.
The Superintendent of Police, Gaurav Upadhyay told NDTV that the villagers had accused the woman of selling illicit liquor and indulging in “anti-social” activities. But only an investigation can establish what exactly spurred this particular attack.
“The villagers had warned her. Even the police had warned her earlier … As to what led to this attack, we will be able to tell properly only after investigation,” he said. PTI
“We have picked up 19 people in two days. The main culprits will also be arrested soon,” said Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia.
Assam has witnessed several instances of mobs doling out vigilante justice over the last few months. Eleven people were arrested in Biswanath district last month for allegedly killing a man and critically injuring three others on suspicion of cattle theft.
Awaaz Nation’s Take!
Nobody is allowed to take law into their own hands just because they think the person on the receiving end of the blows has committed a crime. It is illegal in India and a punishable offence.
Law and order situation needs to be improved in the country to stop these goons from committing these crimes with such impunity.
We at Awaaz Nation condemn such acts and demand strict action against accused!
