Apart from other murder cases, have a look at story of serial killer Auto Shankar that left India shell-shocked. Auto Shankar converted the roads of Madras into hell in just six months. He used to live in a quiet village situated on the banks of the sea in Madras.
Who was Auto Shankar in real life?
Gauri Shankar was born in Vellore, Tamil Nadu in 1955. At that time Madras used to be the city of dreams.
Shankar also reached Madras because he felt Madras was made for him. Shankar, who was interested in films, painting and dance loved Kollywood. It was the first love of Shankar and Madras was the center of Kollywood. Taking the job of a painter in Periyar Nagar, he settled there.
When he did not find anything in Kollywood, he entered in criminal world
Shankar started working as an auto driver. In early decade of eighty, auto rickshaws became number one transport for carrying illegal liquors because autos could run on the roads without any restriction on the streets. Gauri Shankar had now become a smuggler of liquor.
He decided to do something more gruesome and started using his autos for ‘savaaris’ of young women exploited in the burgeoning flesh trade then.
He got involved in flesh trade
He formed his own gang with the help of his younger brother Mohan, his brother-in-law Eldin and trusted accomplices Shivaji, Jayavelu, Rajaraman, Ravi, Palani and Paramasivam.
In 1988, there was disappearance of nine girls from Thiruvanmiyur and a complaint was made to the police. The police, who had full knowledge of Shankar’s exploits, got involved in the matter. They said that all the girls were working in the sex racket and they run away from home. But when the family members of the girls continued to deny this allegation, then the police looked into the matter.
When his victim tried to run away, Auto Shankar killed her & her lover
A young woman Lalitha, was Shankar’s officially first victim. She ran away with Sudalaimuthu, one of his confidantes. Auto Shankar started searching for her like crazy. When Shankar reached her, he brought Lalitha and her lover back to the city of Periyar. Lalita was beaten to death and her lover Sudalaimuthu, was set on fire. He threw the burnt body parts into the sea. Lalita’s body was found after one and a half years.
He killed his gang members also
One day, Mohan (not his younger brother), Sampath and Govindaraj picked up a quarre with Shankar as they they attempted to take away one of Shankar’s women from the L.B.Road lodge.
The three were beaten to death and their bodies were buried on a small plot in Periyar Nagar.
In December 1988, a girl passing through a liquor shop was almost abducted. She escaped from the goons and went straight to the police. The police were fed up with his increasing power. Some police officers reached the liquor shop where the girl was tried to kidnap. The name that came in front of them for the first time was – Auto Shankar.
He had connection with big politicians
Auto Shankar was the man whom all was afraid of. Gauri Shankar was arrested by the police. On June 27, 1988, whole got to know about Auto Shankar.
At the same time, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran passed away. Governor’s Rule was imposed between January 1988 and 1989. At this time the family members of the missing people presented their problems to the governor PC Alexander. Thiruvanmiyur’s police had failed to do anything.
Governor Alexander made a special team for this case. A police officer named Aari was specially deployed in this case because he knew Shankar personally ad was also aware of his habits.
The information collected by Aari helped a lot in this investigation. The police remanded the whole gang of Shankar and did lot of interrogation, gang’s original member Eldin was exposed. He agreed to become a government witness. After receiving the help, the police reached Shankar and arrested him.
He was hanged in 1995
After Shankar’s arrest, the policemen found his diary which had photos of policemen of different ranks posing with him. Many policemen who had served in Tiruvanmiyur were immediately suspended, while a third – an officer of the rank of a deputy superintendent — was sent on long leave and later suspended.
Shankar got convicted of many murders and was hanged to death in Salem Prison in 1995 along with Eldin and Shivaji.
