Yoga guru Ramdev has once again called for punitive measures to control India’s population growth.
On Sunday, he said that the population of India should not cross 150 crore in next 50 years. He stressed that India will not be able to handle a population of more than that. Ramdev also suggested some ways to keep population under check and said that the government must come up with a law under which third child should not get the voting rights and he/she must not be allowed to contest elections too. He also said that third child should not be allowed to enjoy facilities provided by the government.
To Quote Him: “India’s population should not be more than 150 crore in the next 50 years as we are not prepared or ready to bear more than that,” he claimed. “This is only possible when the government makes a law that third child would not be allowed to vote, neither contest election nor he or she enjoys any type of privileges and facilities given by the government.”
If such a law is enacted, people will not give birth to more children, “no matter which religion they belong to”, he added. Fears about an exponential growth in the population of Muslims is often used by many Hindutva hardliners to stoke fears, but it is not supported by facts.
In January, Ramdev had said the voting rights of those who have more than two children should be revoked.
Ban on cow slaughter
Baba Ramdev also demanded full ban on cow-slaughter saying that it was the only way out to reduce the conflict between cow smugglers and “gau rakshak” (cow protectors).
“There should be a complete ban on cow slaughter and it is the only way out to end the conflict that we see between cow smugglers and ‘gau rakshak’. For those who want to eat meat, there are several other types of meat which they can eat,” he said.
Ramdev also pressed for a country-wide ban on liquor.
“In Islamic countries, liquor is banned. If in Islamic countries it can be banned then why not in India? This is the land of sages. There should be a complete ban on liquor in India,” the Yog guru said.
This is not the first time Baba Ramdev has come up with a solution for population control.
Last year too, in November, the yoga guru made a similar statement about restricting access of services provided by the government for schools and hospitals.Ramdev also suggested that unmarried men should be given a ‘special honour’.
Further, voting rights of those with three or more children should be snatched. “In this country, people like me, who never get married, should receive a special honour. Those who get married and produce more than two children should be denied voting rights,” Ramdev had said.
