Not known to make politically-correct statements, Patanjali founder Baba Ramdev on Friday yet again created a controversy. Likening the issue of construction of a Ram Temple in Ayodhya to nation’s pride, the Yoga guru said Lord Ram was the ancestor of not only Hindus but also Muslims. Ramdev while in Nadiad town of Kheda district said the Ram Temple issue is not linked to vote bank politics.
“I believe that Ram mandir must be built in Ayodhya at all costs. If not in Ayodhya, where would you build it? It is obvious that it will not come up at Mecca, Madina or Vatican City,” Ramdev said. The Yoga guru was attending a Yoga camp organised by Santram temple in Nadiad.
“Nobody can dispute the fact that Lord Ram was born in Ayodhya. Not just Hindus, Lord Ram was the ancestor Muslims too. This issue of Ram temple is all about nation’s pride. It has nothing to do with vote bank politics,” Ramdev was quoted by news agency as saying.
Congress hit out at Ramdev saying religious leaders like him are “beneficiaries of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and therefore make such statements.
“People like Baba Ramdev are the beneficiaries of the ruling BJP. Such Baba’s have once again come out to help the BJP and Modi government ahead of polls so that more benefits can be reaped for the next five years,” Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi told PTI.
