It appears that politicians are not even sparing the Gods to spar over religious identity. Weeks after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath kicked up a storm by branding Lord Hanuman as a Dalit and a BJP MLC Bukkal Nawab commented that Hanuman is a Muslim, now comes a third identity for the beloved deity from the Ramayana.
Laxmi Narayan, an MLA from the Yogi Adityanath cabinet, has said that Hanuman is a Jat. “He joined Lord Ram as a servant, hence he has the characteristics of Jat, so I call him a Jat.”

Warn BJP to avoid such statements’
Many prominent priests are unhappy with BJP leaders who declared the caste/religion of Lord Hanuman. They have threatened to approach Modi to find a solution to the recent commentary on the deity’s religion.
Speaking to India Today TV, Mahant Raju Das, priest of Hanumangarhi temple in Ayodhya, said, I warn BJP leaders not to make such statements or else sants are going to unite and take action. If they continue to drag gods and goddesses in politics, then we are going to take up this matter with PM Modi and the UP CM.”
Another priest of Hanumangarhi temple, Mahant Ramesh Das, said: BJP leaders should stop giving such statements. They should take it as a warning. We will not tolerate such controversies and reactions on our deities. We will send a fax to the PMO [Prime Minister’s Office] to complain about such leaders.”
This is the third identity that has been attributed to the Hindu god.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had earlier claimed that Hanuman was a “Dalit tribal”. Yogi was addressing a poll rally in Rajasthan’s Alwar when he had said, “Hanuman was a forest dweller, deprived and a Dalit. On Thursday, BJP MLC and former Samajwadi Party leader Bukkal Nawab had claimed that the deity was a Muslim. “Jahan tak baat hoti hai Hanuman ji ko batne ki, hum batadein ki Hanuman ji pure vishwa ke they, har dharma ke they, har mazhab ke the…(Hanuman belongs to the whole world, every religion…),” Nawab had said.
The BJP leader added, “Jahan tak humara manna hai, Hanuman ji jo they Musalman they, isiliye humare yahan jo naam rakha jata hai Musalmanon ke andar…Rehman hai, Ramzan hai, Imran hai, Furkhan hai, Sultan hai, Suleman hai….woh karib karib Hanuman ji par hi rakhe jate hain, unhi se milta julta (I believe that Hanuman ji was Muslim, that is why among Muslims, names given sound similar to Hanuman, like Ramzan, Imran, Purkhan, Sultan etc),” he had said, claiming that is was his personal opinion.
A Priest claimed that lord Hanuman was a Jain
A priest in Bhopal had also joined the bandwagon after he claimed that Lord Hanuman was neither a Dalit nor a tribal, but a Jain.
This is the lowest level of politics: Opposition
The opposition parties have also slammed the BJP for dragging Lord Hanuman’s identity for campaign activities.
This is the lowest level of politics. The BJP has committed a sin by calling Lord Hanuman a Muslim and people are not going to forget this. This issue was raised by UP CM Yogi Adityanath and people have taught his party a lesson in the recently concluded assembly polls, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari told India Today TV.
Samajwadi Party (SP) spokesperson Sunil Yadav, said, The BJP leaders should consult a psychiatrist. They have lost their mental balance and those giving statements about Lord Hanuman caste need proper treatment.”
This is not the first time the Uttar Pradesh politician has courted a controversy with his remarks. In 2017, while he was still a member of the opposition Samajwadi Party, the councillor spurred protests by saying that he will donate Rs. 15 crore for constructing the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
