It is very difficult for us to believe that women who are known to care or nurture can also be murderers. But this is true, there was an Indian woman serial killer who used to mercilessly kill innocent people because she was motivated purely by greed and the desire for better material comfort. Cyanide Mallika ‘is probably country’s first female serial killer.
Who is Cyanide Mallika
KD Kempamma alias Mallika is also known as Cyanide Mallika. Kempamma was a resident of Kagalipura in Karnataka. In the beginning, she used to work in people’s homes and was caught red handed while stealing. In this case, she was sent to jail for a year. In 1998, her husband kicked her out from the house. Then she ran chit fund company. But there was a considerable loss in this business.
She wanted to become rich very quickly. For this, she again adopted the path of crime. Kempma was 45 years old when she was arrested. She was named ‘Cyanide Mallika’ because she had killed many people with cruelty by giving cyanide. She used to hung around many temples in South India posing herself as a lady who was well versed with religious rituals.
Her targets were women
She killed six women by feeding cyanide between 1999 and 2007. She searched for mentally disturbed women around the temples, assuring them that she would do everything right from the worship. Mallika’s targets were weak women, especially those who used to visit the city’s temples for peace of mind. Most of these women were facing marital problems, or were just too religious who were looking for help. Mallika promised them to solve all the problems they were facing. She used to claim that she knows the art of worshiping and she has the solution to all problems. She claimed that she has miraculous powers.
After winning the trust of women, Mallika used to ask them to wear expensive clothes and ornaments in name of rituals. After that the victims were taken to a deserted place near the temple. Then in the name of Pooja, she asked the victims to close their eyes, she would forcefully make them drink water laced with cyanide by holding their nose. Mallika carried out the killings with this brutality for nine years.
She was married at a young age to a poor tailor
Mallika was married at a young age with a tailor. But she did not like a simple life. She wanted a luxurious life. She did all this for ‘better life and material possessions’. She left her family and realised that crime is a better way of getting wealth.
Mallika’s last victim was Nagveni of Bangalore. She killed her in 2007. Nagaveni had no children and asked Mallike to help her.
Mallika was arrested in 2006 and was awarded the death penalty in 2010. But it was turned to life imprisonment in 2012, which she is currently serving at the Parappana Agrahara jail.
