Scam is a dishonest scheme or fraud in which a person is tricked. We see thousands of scams taking place in India. Out of some big scams, fodder scam was considered as one of the biggest scams in India.

This multi-million animal husbandry department scams is also the ‘mother of all scams’ as the corruption was worth Rs 900 crore. It even led to Lalu Yadav resigning from his position for corruption.

A special CBI court on 23 December convicted former Bihar CM and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Fodder scam case. 15 other people including former animal husbandry department officials were also convicted by special judge Shivpal Singh in the case.

Former Bihar chief minister Lalu Yadav is an accused in Fodder scam (Chara Ghotala).

The scam came to light in the year 1996 when it was found that some influential politicians were forging documents of the animal husbandry department of Bihar.

The scam caused a lot of damage to the legal and economic situation of the country. The culprits would supply fewer goods but would inflate the figures in official documents.

It is a case pertaining to the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of around Rs. 85 lakh from the Deoghar district treasury between 1994 and 1996 when Lalu was the Chief Minister.

In the investigation, a charge-sheet was filed against 38 persons, on October 27, 1997.

Mr. Prasad was earlier sentenced to 5 years in jail. He was fined Rs 25 lakh for fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 37.5 crore from the Chaibasa treasury but Supreme Court granted him bail in December 2013.

In 2012, CBI framed charges against Lalu Yadav and others and were convicted by a Patna CBI court in 2013.

Lalu Yadav raised his voice against this decision but still he was barred from contesting any election for 11 years. Lalu moved the Jharkhand HC in 2014 and challenged the verdict of the CBI court.

CBI court on 6 January 2017 sentenced RJD chief Lalu Prasad to three-and-a-half years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on him.

There are around 53 cases of financial irregularities under fodder scam and special trial courts have decided 45 of the cases.

This scam hunted down a social revolutionary of Bihar. If convicted, RJD chief  Lalu Prasad Yadav will be taken into custody.
