In the 29-second clip was shot by a policeman driving the car and shows a woman, her face covered with a scarf, sitting in the rear, next to a woman constable and another policeman. A male voice is heard using a derogatory reference to Muslims and “Sharam nahi aati (Don’t you feel ashamed)” when the woman constable slaps her on the head repeatedly.
“You prefer Muslims when there are so many Hindus around,” taunts a policeman. At this point, the woman constable starts beating the young woman and removes the scarf she used to cover her face. The beating goes on and on throughout. The attackers accused the two of “love jihad”, a term used by a particular wing groups to describe a relationship between a Hindu woman and a Muslim man.

Police team was sent to protect the girl but…
The cop shared the video with his colleagues, and it reached the media.
The police team was sent to rescue the girl after members of vigilante groups “raided” the man’s rented apartment on September 23. After the video of the incident went viral on social media, the Uttar Pradesh Police suspended three constables and relieved one home guard of duty.
According to Ranvijay Singh, SP City, Meerut, the incident took place on September 23 under the jurisdiction of the Medical College police station. He said that the couple in question are both nursing students and the woman (20) is a Hindu while the man (22) is a Muslim. (IndianExpress)
“The boy doesn’t live in the college hostel and he and the girl went to his apartment in Jagriti Vihar. A crowd gathered and created a ruckus there. Police arrived at the spot and took them to the station for their protection. Their parents said that they did not want to file an FIR in the matter and both went back to their respective homes,” Singh said.

What Had Actually Happened?
According to NDTV, the man and the woman were studying together at the former’s house on Sunday, 23 September, when alleged VHP members reached there, assaulted them and accused them of “love jihad,” before handing them over to the cops.
On reaching the police station, the two were reportedly attacked again by the VHP members. However, the men allegedly part of the assault have not been arrested yet.
“We were sitting and studying when members of Bajrang Dal came, locked me up in a room and beat him (the man) up. They asked me for an ID and taunted us saying ‘how will you get married? He’s Muslim, you’re Hindu’,” the girl who was beaten up said.
“We said there’s nothing like that. Police reached later and put us in separate vehicles. They misbehaved with me. In police station, a woman asked me to file a rape complaint against him. My family and I refused,” the girl told ANI.
Awaaz Nation’s Take!
The police taking part in the agenda of these lawless activists is threat to democracy. Strict action should be taken against these police officers.
Nobody is allowed to take law into their own hands just because they think the person on the receiving end of the blows has committed a crime. It is illegal in India and a punishable offence.
Law and order situation needs to be improved in the country to stop these goons from committing these crimes with such impunity.
We at Awaaz Nation condemn such acts and demand strict action against accused!
