On June 9, the Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar, announced the names of six institutions of higher education – three each in public and private sectors – that have been granted the status of “Institution of Eminence”.
The government granted “Institutions of Eminence” (IoEs) status to IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay and the Bengaluru-based Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in the public sector, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, BITS Pilani and Jio Institute by Reliance Foundation in the private sector.
Jio Institute has been selected under the Greenfield Category – pertaining to new institutes – and according to officials, 10 other institutes had applied for it.
Greenfield projects are those projects which start from the scratch and are not modifying or upgrading any already established projects. The latter are called brownfield projects
What the HRD Ministry said?
Clarifying that they assessed 11 institutions the EEC said they have taken the following parameters into consideration
1) Availability of land for construction of the institution 2) Putting in place a core team with very high qualification and wide experience3) Making available funding for setting up the intitution4) A stratetigic vision plan with clear annual milesones
The committee said only Jio Institute satisfied all four parameters.
Here is what ” Head of the Empowered Expert Committee N Gopalaswami said.
N Gopalaswami told the Economic Times: “We considered the eligibility criteria carefully and we could not find 20 institutes that we felt would be able to find a place among top 500 global rankings in ten years.” i told the Economic Times: “We considered the eligibility criteria carefully and we could not find 20 institutes that we felt would be able to find a place among top 500 global rankings in ten years.”
The decision attracted sharp criticism on social media!
The decision drew sharp criticism from various quarters with many questioning the process of selection and the motive behind it. Jio trended on Twitter, with many tagging Education Minister Prakash Javadekar, asking him about the institute’s location and credentials.
Its shameful that an institution like IISc Bangalore is equated to something called #JioInstitute which nobody has ever heard of. The government is seen colluding openly with crony capitalists which is even worse.

Clarification by @PrakashJavdekar on #JioInstitute being granted Institution of Eminence tag further clarifies some basic facts on India🙄
Experience/Track record doesn’t matter, as long as you can show the money & contacts – all doors will open for you🙏 https://t.co/FUuKGQepBk

Still amazing that an organization that is yet to start operations gets this tag while others don’t @arvindneela Just shows Reliance’s clout.Reflects poorly on @narendramodi governance and notions of fair play #JioInstitute So whether @paranjoygt got a fact wrong quite irrelevant https://t.co/hc1sTnumlV

If the top 6 colleges needed to have private reservations- there was already a problem. Any list that excluded IITM and IITKGP was already idiotic.
But if you include Manipal (of Mohandas Pai) it’s already farcical. Forget #JioInstitute

People try to get seats through Management Quota.
But Ambani has managed to get an entire Institute through Management Quota.
