In a video that has now gone super viral, a group of Saffron-clad men, allegedly belonging to a right-wing outfit Vishwa Hindu Dal, can be seen thrashing vendor, who was selling dry fruits.

While one of the videos shows a Kashmiri man crying out as he is being attacked by two men wielding sticks, and the other video shows passersby coming to the aid of a dry fruits seller. When a man in a red jacket asks the attackers why they are beating up the vendor, the goons reply “because he is Kashmiri” and go on to heckle him for his Aadhaar card.

The videos sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many appalled at the nature of the attack. Others lauded the people who came to the Kashmiri man’s aid.
One of the assaulters, Himanshu Awasthi, self-proclaimed “former BJP politician” and member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, posted videos and photos on his Facebook profile boasting about thrashing Kashmiris on the Daligunj Bridge in Lucknow.

The police registered a case of rioting and breach of peace and arrested one person in connection with the assault. “A case has been filed at Hazratganj police station. A search is on for the accused,” said police officer Amit Kumar. “An investigation will be done.”
Omar Abdullah urges PM to take action

Sharing a video of the assault, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday expressed concern.

Addressing a tweet to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “This is what you had spoken against and yet it continues unabated. This is the state governed by your handpicked chief minister,” said Abdullah. “Can we expect action in this case or do we file your concern and assurances as a jumla, meant to placate but nothing more?”

Discrimination against Kashmiris have increased after Pulwama Terror attack

Kashmiris have faced discrimination and assaults in several parts of the country following the February 14 terror attack in Pulwama in which 44 CRPF soldiers were killed. The attacker (Suicide bomber) was a Kashmri Muslim teen, Adil Ahmad Dar who hated India. In Uttarakhand, students were forced to the leave college campuses. Two Dehradun-based educational institutions have said they will not admit Kashmiri students in future.

On 22, February, the Supreme Court, hearing a plea seeking its intervention to prevent alleged threats on Kashmiri people and students, had issued notices to the Central government and 11 states and sought their response on the issue. The court had also asked the Delhi police commissioner, along with the chief secretaries and director generals of police of Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand to take “prompt” and necessary action to prevent such incidents.
