News of moral policing in India is not something new. They are, however, just as unfair and anger-inducing each time.
This time, such an episode was reported in Kolkata on Monday evening (30 April). A couple travelling by Kolkata Metro last evening was allegedly beaten up at the Dum Dum metro station for ‘hugging’ in the train.
Here is how the dispute started
The dispute, as per the eyewitness, had broken out between a young couple and an aged man who was livid over them hugging in the metro. It is said that while the aged man was initially alone in taking it up with the couple, a group later joined him to abusing and threatening the couple.
Anandabazar Patrika reported that the incident followed a heated argument between the couple and the culprits. As the train reached the Dum Dum metro station, the couple was reportedly dragged out of the train to the platform and the mob started beating up the man
“So far, only one person was yelling. But now, seeing the young guy throw sharp replies at the aged man stirred up the ‘conscience’ of others on the train,” wrote an eyewitness in Bengali.
“One by one, others started raising their voices. Nobody was berating the couple anymore; they had graduated to straight threats, ‘Get down at Dum Dum, we’ll see you!'” an eyewitness wrote in Bengali. As soon as the train reached Dum Dum, the eyewitness says, the mob dragged the young man off the metro and began assaulting him.
Even the young girl became a target of the mob’s “punches, kicks, slaps, sticks” aimed at her partner.
Meanwhile, in her feeble attempt to protect the man, the young woman intervened to save her partner and also came in between punches, kicks, slaps, sticks that were targeted at her partner. She also got beaten up by the angry mob. It was only when a group of youngsters and women came to the couple’s rescue that the situation could be brought under control.
The CCTV footage in the station did not record any incident of an assault, she claimed, though videos of the thrashing, which were shot by eyewitnesses, have since gone viral all over the social media. Protests were held outside the Dum Dum Metro station on 1 May 2018 against the incident.
Renowned author and activist Taslima Nasreen and others have slammed the so called moral policing
“A young couple embraced in Kolkata Metro. It made a bunch of frustrated old losers angry. They beat them up. Scenes of hatred are allowed. Scenes of love are considered obscene,” writer Tasleema Nasreen tweeted.
