 Shastri never used his office car for his personal uses

 When his son used the car for a drive, Shastri deposited money into the government account to pay for the distance traveled. This is one reason he is considered one of the modest Prime Minister, India had ever seen.

Why do you make first class arrangements for a third class person?

Once he had to cancel a visit to a state due to some urgent work. The CM of the state requested Shastri not to cancel the programme and said that he had made special first class arrangements for him.

However Shastri refused to oblige and responded,” Why do you make first class arrangements for a third class person.”

He told his family members to sacrifice one meal a day

During the 1964 Pakistan war there was food shortage and the US had threatened India that it would cut off all food supplies. Then Shastri told his family that for a week none shall cook a meal in the evening.

After he was sure that his own family could survive without a meal a day, Shastri announced on All India Radio, urging the public to sacrifice one meal at least once a week. He coined the slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ during the war with Pakistan to encourage famers.

Shastri had no possession when he died

When Lal Bahadur Shastri passed away in 1966 he did not have his own house on his name, nor any land in his possession. Can you imagine, he did not even possess a house of his own, when he was the Home Minister? Yes, this is one of the various instances which show his humbleness.
