The brutal rape of an seven year-old girl in Mandsaur is a painful reminder of the infamous 2012 Nirbhaya case in Delhi where a nursing student was sexually assaulted by six people onboard a private bus before being abandoned on the roadside.
Thousands of people came out on streets in Mandsaur as news of the brutality faced by the eight-year-old girl reached them.
Women and children joined the protest and demanded justice as social media joined to express their angst on the heinous crime.
What Happened on 26 June
On 26 June, an eight-year-old girl was raped and assaulted by a 20-year-old man in Mandsaur. The girl was waiting for a family member to pick her up from school. The accused (Irfan Khan) who is a 20-year-old labourer at a local market abducted, raped her, slit her throat with a sharp weapon and then dumped her body at a vacant plot. Miraculously the girl survived.
Doctors treating the girl said there were several bite marks on her body, her nose was badly injured and rectum was ruptured, indicating that an object had been inserted into her privates. They had to cut some nerves to perform three surgeries to save the girl and her condition is stable now, they added.
Locals demand justice
The Mandsaur District Bar Association (MDBA), which convened an emergency meeting on Thursday, resolved that no lawyer would defend the accused.
MDBA President Jaideep Singh told PTI that they have petitioned the district judge asking him to try the case in a fast track court.
He added that a team of 100 lawyers would be made available to fight the case for the victim.
Yeh darinde dharti par bojh hai. (These rapists are a ‘burden on the earth) – Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan while talking to media persons condemned the incident saying that rapists were a ‘burden on the earth’ and did not deserve to live.
“Yeh darinde dharti par bojh hai. Yeh dharti par jeevit rahne ke layak nahi hai,” (These beasts are a burden on the earth. They do not deserve to live),” Chouhan told reporters at his residence.
“In cases of rape, we have made a provision for trial in the fast track courts. We will request the high court and the Supreme Court to make a similar provision so that culprits in such crimes get capital punishment at the earliest,” he added.
