A 25-year-old mentally challenged man was mercilessly thrashed by locals here who suspected him of being a child lifter. The incident took place at the Patalamma Layout in Kadugodi, Whitefield on Thursday evening

Residents of a neighbourhood in Whitefield spotted the man – who is from Odisha – and feared that would kidnap children. Police said the man was tied to a tree with a rope and beaten up by locals.

Onlookers refused to help him while he was being attacked. Some whipped out their cellphones to take videos. The police have arrested one of the attackers, Rajesh, 30, and efforts are on to track down the others.

The man entered a house in Patalamma Layout around 4.30 p.m. seeking alms. Then residents came out of the house screaming. Passerby and neighbours caught him and tied him to a tree.

The Kadugodi police rushed to the spot after the alert. They took him to the police station and after interrogation, they learnt that he was mentally disturbed and admitted him to a hospital. The police have registered an FIR against all the those who assaulted the youth and instructions were given to the Kadugodi inspector to initiate action against those who beat up the you.

The police said the mob was provoked after a person referred to a WhatsApp message regarding child lifters. The incident is similar to a spate of attacks that unfolded in May in Bengaluru and surrounding areas after messages and videos warning people about child-trafficking gangs on the prowl went viral on social media.

This mob attack in Bengaluru comes close to two months after a 32-year-old software engineer was beaten to death by a mob in north Karnataka’s Bidar over WhatsApp-driven rumours of child kidnapping.

In July, the govenrment had asked the states and Union territories to check incidents of mob killings fueled by rumours of child lifting on social media.
