Congress leader Shashi Tharoor kicked up a storm on Sunday (28 October) after he quoted an unnamed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s member calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a scorpion.
In a video released by ANI, Tharoor, who was addressing an audience at the Bengaluru Literature Festival, is heard saying, “There is an extraordinarily striking metaphor expressed by an unnamed RSS source to a journalist, that, ‘Modi is like a scorpion sitting on a Shivling, you can’t remove him with your hand & you cannot hit it with a chappal either’.”

Tharoor was quoting an unnamed RSS leader who spoke to journalist Vinod Jose of The Caravan as part of his extensive profile on Narendra Modi before he became prime minister. The piece, ‘The Emperor Uncrowned’, first published in March 2012, captures the rise of Modi from an RSS functionary to the chief minister of Gujarat.
BJP Came Down Heavily on Tharoor
Rahul Gandhi you claim yourself be to a Shiv Bhakt please reply to this very horrific denunciation of Lord Mahadev by giving apology to what Tharoor has done: Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tharoor’s statement,”Modi is like a scorpion sitting on a Shivling.” pic.twitter.com/QoO6VHEjf5

Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad later in the day came down heavily on Congress president Rahul Gandhi, seeking explanations from the party leadership over Tharoor’s statements.
“Rahul Gandhi, you claim yourself be a Shiv Bhakt, but please respond to this very horrific denunciation of Lord Mahadev by giving apology to what Tharoor has done,” Prasad said.
He further said that ‘while Rahul Gandhi claims himself to be a Shiv bhakt, one of his small leaders has almost abused the sanctity of Shiv Linga and Lord Mahadev by referring to chappal attack through named sources’.
Union minister Giriraj Singh, too, criticised Tharoor, saying he would have been “silenced” had he made such a statement on a prime minister in Pakistan. “This is India. Had he made such a statement in Pakistan, Tharoor would have been silenced. He hasn’t insulted the prime minister; he has insulted crores of Hindus and Lord Shiv. All I’ll say is that the Congress is crossing the line now,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.
शशि थरूर का चरित्र ऐसा नहीं कि वो किसी और पर टीका टिप्पणी करें ।

Tharoor tweeted a clarification about his remarks on Modi and RSS.
Tharoor tweeted a clarification suggesting that he quoted a source who was mentioned in a Caravan magazine article by Vinod K Jose. The article, titled ‘Emperor Uncrowned’ was published on March 1, 2012 in Caravan magazine. The article explores the rise of Narendra Modi in the ranks of BJP and in the Indian political scenario. In one of the sections, the article speaks about how Modi has often been in conflict with the RSS and had been pulled up on some occasions for not following its diktat like the rest of the paracharaks.
In view of the unseemly demonisation of an out of context remark today involving a scorpion metaphor, my book #TheParadoxicalPrimeMinister cites & footnotes this article — please see the last paragraph of this article. https://t.co/wgrBrjiM7T
