Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the AK-203 rifle manufacturing unit in Amethi on 3 March 2019. It is the latest derivative of the legendary AK-47 rifle. The rifles will progressively replace the Army’s in-service INSAS and AK-47 rifles. The 200-series of AK rifles represent the next generation and evolution of the 100-series of AKs.
Targeting Rahul Gandhi repeatedly without naming him, the Prime Minister told the gathering: “Some people go around giving speeches of ‘made in Ujjain’, ‘made in Jaipur’, ‘made in Jaisalmer’…this is Modi. Now ‘Made in Amethi’ will be AK-203 rifles. It will help our jawans.” the prime minister told crowd in Amethi.
The project, in collaboration with Russia, will be undertaken at the Korwa ordnance factory
Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote a note to Indians saying the country’s needs of national security will be fulfilled with the advanced Russian technologies and also create new jobs.
Putin wrote in his note, “The new joint venture will manufacture world famous Kalashnikov assault rifles of the newest 200 series and eventually will reach full localization of production. Thus, the Indian defence-industrial sector will have the opportunity to fulfill the needs of national security agencies in this category of small arms, resting upon advanced Russian technologies.”
PM Modi, on the other hand, thanked Russia and said, “One of the most advanced rifles in world AK-203 will be made in Amethi. It will be made by a joint-venture of India and Russia. I express my gratitude to my friend President Vladimir Putin. This venture was made possible in such a short time by his support.”
Putin also said that the new rifle manufacturing unit will boost India’s defence and also create new jobs.
A day after PM Modi visited Amethi in Uttar Pradesh the Congress president posted a tweet accused him of “lying by force of habit”.
Rahul Gandhi accused the prime minister of lying to the people and said, “Prime Ministerji, I had laid the foundation stone for the Ordinance Factory in Amethi in 2010. For the past many years, several small arms have been produced. Yesterday you went to Amethi and because of your habit; you were forced to lie once again. Don’t you feel ashamed at all?”

Soon after Rahul Gandhi’s attack on PM Modi, Union Minister Smriti Irani slammed the Congress chief for attacking the prime minister with “wrong facts”, saying that he did not even bother to check what was being inaugurated in Amethi.
“You are so scared of the development in Amethi that you did not even bother to check that what is being inaugurated in Amethi is an Indo-Russian joint-venture under which the two countries have agreed to manufacture AK-203 rifles,” Smriti Irani said.
