The Muzaffarpur shelter home has been under a spotlight over the last few weeks following allegations that girls who lived there were sexually exploited. At least 34 girls, aged between 7 and 17, were raped over a period of time in a state-funded shelter home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district. Instances of sexual exploitation of the inmates of “Balika Grih” run by NGO Seva Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti were reported by Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) last month. Altogether 42 girls were lodged at the facility at that time.

The number of girls raped at a government shelter home in Bihar has gone up to 34, according to a fresh medical report. Earlier, medical examinations of 29 of the 42 inmates of the shelter home in Muzaffarpur district confirmed that they were raped for months.
Ten out of 11 accused have been arrested. After pressure from the opposition, the Nitish Kumar government on Thursday handed over the investigation into the alleged sexual assault to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The police filed a chargesheet against the ten who were arrested.
Meanwhile, politics over the incident is heating up.
Terming the incident unfortunate, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and former deputy chief minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, accused the Nitish Kumar-led state government of shielding the culprits.
Yadav tweeted in Hindi and said, “Think? How would you feel if your family and the village’s seven to 17-year-old sisters or daughters, supported and sponsored devils, were raped her for months? There is a flood of rape in Bihar and the government is silent. They just care about their power!”
A girl alleged that one of girls living at the shelter home was beaten to death by the staff and buried inside the institution’s premises.
Police dug up the compound in the presence of Muzaffarpur SSP Harpreet Kaur and three victims on Monday, but nothing was found immediately.
The girl inmates were shifted from Muzaffarpur to other homes, while medical tests were carried out to ascertain rape.
Cases of sexual exploitation were reported by Mumbai-based TISS last month. Ten persons, including NGO’s owner, have been arrested.
