Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday sought to expand his self-designated “chowkidar” status to the rest of the country and said that everyone who was social evils was a “chowkidar”.
The tweet is aimed at launching the ‘Mai Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign and is being seen as a kick-starter for BJP’s campaign for Lok Sabha Elections 2019.
In a tweet put out on his @narendramodi handle, PM Modi wrote, “Your Chowkidar is standing firm & serving the nation. But, I am not alone. Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar. Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a Chowkidar. Today, every Indian is saying-#MainBhiChowkidar.” BJP has also leveraged a unique tech innovation called conversation cards on twitter for this campaign.
The tweet was accompanied by 3 minute 45 second video that begins with the PM addressing the people saying, “Your chowkidar is absolutely alert”. The video then moves into a song with visuals of people from across the length and breadth of the country, singing “main bhi chowkidar hun” as part of the chorus of the song.
Your Chowkidar is standing firm & serving the nation.
But, I am not alone.
Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar.
Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a Chowkidar.
Today, every Indian is saying-#MainBhiChowkidar

BJP functionaries said ‘Mai Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign has been started after extensive surveys and data analysis by BJP strategists who feel that Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ jibes and campaign is not resonating among people. “Surveys suggest that it is actually angering people,” BJP leaders said.
This campaign will also further drive the narrative of PM’s strong and decisive image which multiple surveys have conveyed is the main factor in the upcoming elections, the leaders said. PM Modi will also interact with people from across the country on March 31 as a part of this campaign. This is a similar strategy as 2014 where BJP turned around Manishankar Aiyar’s ‘Chaiwalla’ jibe into a mass campaign, BJP leaders said.
Announcing the dates for the polls the Election Commission had said that the Lok Sabha polls will be held in 7 phases from April 11 to May 19 and the counting of votes in 543 constituencies will start on May 23.
PM Modi, who represents Varanasi in the Lok Sabha, has decided to contest from the holy city again. As per media reports Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad “Raavan” will also contest from Varanasi.
Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi urged people to consider parliamentary polls as “another independence struggle” and urged them to raise the real issues which they are facing.
