Congress president Rahul Gandhi offered weird analogies on 11 June 2018 to argue that skilled OBC communities are being given short shrift by the Modi government, unlike abroad where the owner of Coca-Cola used to sell shikanji (lemonade) in the US while the owners of McDonald’s ran a “dhaba”.

Talking at the national OBC convention for the party at Talkatora Stadium in the Capital, the Congress leader took a jibe at the Opposition by saying he wants to see those dhaba owners in India who have turned into the founders of Coca-Cola and McDonald’s.

“Who started Coca-Cola company? Do you know? I will tell you who,” the Congress president said as he addressed his party’s convention for backward castes at an indoor stadium.

“Coca-Cola wala America mein shikanji bechta tha (The man who started Coca Cola sold shikanji in the US). He sold sugar mixed in water. His skill was recognised and rewarded,” he said.

Warming up to his theme, he also said, “You know McDonald’s. It is everywhere. Who started it? He ran a dhaba (food joint) but we all have seen the brand’s progress. You show me one person who runs a dhaba and has sent up a Coca-Cola in India. Ford was a mechanic, so was Honda.”

“It was a mechanic. Ford and Honda were mechanics. You show me an automobile company in India that was started by a mechanic. Where is it? It is not that our people, our ‘dhaba-wallahs’ do not have sense and strength. It is not that India’s mechanics did not have the potential as that of Ford or Mercedes. But it is that if the doors of bank are open for Ford, Mercedes, then the doors of banks and politics are shut for our ‘dhabawalas’, mechanics and ‘dhobis’ and other backwards,” he said at the convention.

A small clip from his address was shared by news agency ANI on Twitter and soon the video got everyone talking.

Gandhi went on to ask the gathering if they had heard of the Ford company, Mercedes and Honda and who had started them.

Rahul Gandhi used the anecdotes to target the ruling BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing them of benefiting a handful of industrialists. “The BJP’s strategy is clear. 15-20 rich capitalists will give thousands of crores to PM Modi and all benefits will go to just those 15-20 rich people.”

While some netizens and politicians were quick to troll the leader, others took a sarcastic route and countered the politician’s claim. Soon with hashtag #AccordingToRahulGandhi, meme-makers on titter came up with their sassy responses to his claim.

With more than 10,000 tweets, at the time of writing, it was the top trend on the social media site. Thousands mocked him in various creative ways, using pictures, cartoons and graphics.

Rahul also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that his government has ignored the interests of farmers, but has helped a small group of industrialists by waiving loans amounting to nearly Rs 2.5 lakh crore. He said that people who work hard behind the scene are “never benefitted” and the fruits of their toil are enjoyed by others.
