Election Commission has issued a notice against Congress President Rahul Gandhi for violating model code of conduct and sought a reply within 48 hours (till May 3) for the same.
Gandhi had on April 23 claimed at a Madhya Pradesh rally that Narendra Modi-led NDA government has made a new law that allows officers to shoot adivasis.
“Narendra Modi has made a new law that allows police to shoot at tribals. The law says that tribals can be attacked. They take away your lands, take away your forests, they take away your water, and then they say tribals can be shot at,” the notice quoted Gandhi as saying at a rally in Shahdol.
The commission has given Gandhi 48 hours to respond to the notice, failing which “it will take a decision without further reference to him”. The notice has been served to him through a special messenger.
The Congress president is yet to comment on the matter.
The EC acted on the complaint lodged by the BJP. Earlier, the Election Commission had concluded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not violated its instructions by urging first-time voters at Latur in Maharashtra on April 9 to dedicate their votes their votes to the defence personnel who had carried out India’s February 26 air strike on a terror camp in Pakistan.
“I want to tell the first-time voters: can your first vote be dedicated to the veer jawans (valiant soldiers) who carried out the air strike in Pakistan. Can your first vote be dedicated to the veer shaheed (brave martyrs) of Pulwama (terror attack),” Modi had said.
Congress has already been served many ultimatums by the EC for comments made by the party members. Lately, the newly joined leaders in the Congress, namely Shatrughan Sinha, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Udit Raj have made controversial and derogatory statements against important national symbols and dignitaries.
Recently, the frustration of Congress party in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 clearly came out after a video went viral in which children who were using abusive language to describe Prime Minister Narendra Modi in front of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
While the kids were hurling abuses at PM Modi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra could be seen giving a sheepish smile and casually telling them, “ye wala nahi, ye acha nahi lag raha (Not this one, this doesn’t sound good).
In the video, Priyanka can be seen laughing while excited children raise pro-Rahul Gandhi slogans along with “Chowkidar chor hai”.
