Smriti Irani on Sabarimala temple row: Can’t take blood-soaked pad to friend’s then why into the house of God? Here is her clarification!

The Supreme Court, in a landmark verdict, recently threw open the doors of Sabarimala temple in Kerala to all women; earlier women of menstruating age were barred entry to the temple, which is the abode of Lord Ayyappa, who is considered to be celibate.

Irani yesterday spoke on the issue at an event in Mumbai. During the discussion, the issue of women’s entry into Sabarimala came up.

I am nobody to speak of the Supreme Court verdict because I am a current serving cabinet minister… I believe I have the right to pray but I don’t have the right to desecrate. And that is the difference that we need to recognise and respect,” Smriti Irani, 42, said at an event in Mumbai called the Young Thinkers’ Conference.

“…just plain common sense. Would you take sanitary napkins seeped in menstrual blood and walk into a friend’s home? You could not. And would you think it is respectable to do the same thing when you are walking into the house of god?” questioned the minister.

She shared an incident when she had to wait outside a fire temple in Mumbai, with her son inside. “…What does that mean irrespective of whether I am a politician or a minister, because I have two Zoroastrian children and a Zoroastrian husband. I am made to stand outside. I will stand either on the road or sit in my car… When I took my newborn son (to a fire temple in Andheri), I had to give him at the temple, gave him to my husband, because I was shooed away and told don’t stand here,” she said.

Alright? I believe that I have a right to pray but I don’t have a right to desecrate. And that is a difference that we need to recognise and respect,” she told the audience.

As her comments triggered a debate on social media, Irani tweeted what she called were “two factual statements”. “As a practicing Hindu married to a practicing Zoroastrian I am not allowed to enter a fire temple to pray. I respect that stand by the Zoroastrian community/ priests and do not approach any court for a right to pray as a mother of 2 Zoroastrian children. Similarly Parsi or non Parsi menstruating women irrespective of age Do NOT go to a Fire Temple,” she tweeted.

Terming the rest as “propaganda/ agenda being launched using me as a bait”, she tweeted: “As far as those who jump the gun regarding women visiting friend’s place with a sanitary napkin dipped in menstrual blood – I am yet to find a person who ‘takes’ a soaked napkin to ‘offer’ to any one let alone a friend. But what fascinates me.

Though does not surprise me is that as a woman I am not free to have my own point of view. As long as I conform to the ‘liberal’ point of view I’m acceptable. How Liberal is that??”

SABARIMALA VERDICT

A 5-Judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court on September 28 ruled that women of all ages have a right to enter the shrine and offer prayers. The bench observed that not allowing menstruating women into the Sabarimala is ultra vires the constitution.

After the verdict, while the ruling CPM pushed for the implementation of the verdict the state’s BJP unit and the Congress urged that an ordinance be passed to continue the ban.

Following the verdict, the issue has snowballed into a full-fledged controversy with several public figures also making remarks on the contentious issue.

Earlier, veteran Malayalam actor Kollam Thulasi, issued an open threat challenging the verdict saying that women entering the temple should be ripped in half.
