Congress candidate from Hoshiarpur Raj Kumar Chabbewal on Thursday mocked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for fielding actor Sunny Deol from Punjab’s Gurdaspur and said the party could not stop the Congress wave in Punjab.

Raj Kumar Chabbewal said the “Congress wave” would not be stopped whether  BJP fields ‘Sunny Deol or Sunny Leone’.

“The Narendra Modi government has failed miserably. They (BJP) can’t find candidates even for three seats in Punjab. They have fielded Sunny Deol in Gurdaspur. The BJP can bring Sunny Deol or Sunny Leone but no one will be able to stand before this aandhi,” Congress candidate from Hoshiarpur Raj Kumar Chabbewal said, according to ANI.

The BJP announced Sunny Deol’s candidature from Gurdaspur, the seat actor Late Vinod Khanna won in 2014, soon after he joined the party on April 23. He filed his nomination papers the next day and has been campaigning since. He is up against Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar.

In 1998, when Vinod Khanna, who had no Punjab connection, was made the party candidate and he trounced six-time Congress MP Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder from the segment. He went on to win from the seat four times.

Deol’s father Dharmendra represented the Bikaner Lok Sabha seat from 2004 to 2009. In the current Lok Sabha elections, Dharmendra has made a few appearances to campaign for his wife Hema Malini who is a sitting MP from Mathura. Deol had met BJP president Amit Shah last week.

Sunny Deol, was given a hand-pump by supporters

Deol’s supporters gave him handpump at his roadshow in Punjab’s Gurdaspur, from where he will be contesting the Lok Sabha elections. While giving a politician a hand pump may be seen as odd, for Sunny Deol, it was a throwback to his 2001 blockbuster movie “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha“.

The 62-year-old actor was greeting his supporters from the sun roof of his car as they gave him garlands and showered him with flowers. Some supporters, standing close to the road, held up a hand pump to him. Mr Deol first smiled and folded his hands, but eventually obliged his fans by holding on to the hand pump for a few seconds.

Sunny Deol, in a scene in “Gadar“, uproots a hand pump from the ground and uses it to fight off a hostile crowd that was rushing to attack him. The much celebrated scene in Gadar also has Sunny Deol’s famous dialogue “Hindustan zindabad tha, zindabad hai, zindabad rahega“.
