The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to the Centre on a petition challenging the notification banning sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for slaughter. Justices Ashok Bhushan and Deepak Gupta are hearing the petition.
The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulations of Livestock Markets) Rule require sellers to provide a signed declaration that the cattle has not been brought to market for sale for slaughter. Buyers of cattle shall not sell the animal for the purpose of slaughter. The declaration should have the name and address of the owner of the cattle and a copy of a photo identity proof. Details that identify the cattle should also be mentioned.
