In the national capital of a country that takes pride in being the world’s fastest growing economy and achieving surplus farm production, three baby girls — aged eight, four and two years — died because they did not get anything to eat.

According to the doctors the three girls were brought to the hospital by their family on Tuesday at least 8-10 hours after they had died.

Police said the father of the three girls who used to work as a rickshaw driver has been missing, and the mother is mentally unstable.

“There was no trace of fat on their bodies. Postmortem showed the stomach was absolutely empty. It’s a case of gross malnutrition,” said Dr Amita Saxena, the MS of Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital.

The final cause of death is almost never hunger, but a more immediate ailment, such as diarrhoea or pneumonia, as was also the case in the deaths of the Delhi girls. Children die because they are too weak from hunger, which depletes their bodies of the necessary biological potions that would have staved off these diseases.

The girls family had moved to Mandawali a few days back and they were living with a relative after earlier landlord removed them from the house due to lack of money.

Their father, Mangal, is a rickshaw-puller, but some people had reportedly taken away his rickshaw a few days ago, and since then there was no work for him. The family is financially weak.

The second second autopsy was conducted at GTB Hospital that found no injury marks, with doctors saying “It looked like a typical case of malnutrition, dishevelled, monkey-like face, no trace of fat in the bodies.”

“And when the body was opened, stomach, bladder and rectum were all found empty,” Medical Superintendent of LBS Hospital, Dr Amita Saxena said adding they did not suspect any foul play like poisoning as there was “no food in the stomach”.

And The Politics Has Started!

“It is utterly shameful… I don’t want to make it about politics… The centre sends subsidised food; it is the Delhi government’s job to deliver it to citizens,” said BJP’s Delhi chief Manoj Tiwari.

Congress’s Ajay Maken, after meeting the girls’ mother, said: “Shocking to hear their story, the failure of the government and the system.”

The AAP accused the BJP of pointing fingers after blocking its scheme for doorstep delivery of services including ration.

“Delhi government has been begging for a year for the doorstep delivery of ration. Who has been blocking it? There should be an investigation,” said AAP’s Sanjay Sharma.
