India’s independence was hard-fought and unfold countless stories of supreme sacrifice. Though we remember many freedom fighters but there are many people and their contributions that we are not aware of.

They also sacrificed their lives for the independence of India and their actions continued to stir the desire for freedom until it was achieved in 1947. We celebrate Martyrs Day is observed on various days in India. March 23 and January 30 are observed as Shaheed Diwas.

Of the hundreds of martyrs, these are 5 less heard freedom fighters of all time who struggled for India’s freedom.

Durgabai Deshmukh

She played an important role in India’s struggle for independence. The iron lady was a

member of the Constituent Assembly, an advocate, a social worker, a politician and a freedom fighter.

She participated in the Non-Co-operation Movement when she was only 12. Deshmukh was imprisoned in 1930 and again in 1932. From her birth till death she devoted her entire energy to the welfare of Indian women and children.

Bhagat Singh

Born in September 28, 1909, Bhagat Singh was the founder of Hindustan Socialist Republican Army. He refused to marry in order to dedicate himself for the country. Singh organized many revolutionary activities against the Simon Commission and the British rule.

He was sentenced to death by hanging in a bomb explosion case in the Central Legislative Assembly  in 1929. His friends Sukhdev and Shivram Rajguru, were also given the same punishment.

Senapati Bapat

He led the Mulshi Satyagraha (1921), and acquired the title of Senapati as a result of his management during that satyagraha. He was a great revolutionary freedom fighter.

 Potti Sriramulu

Peer Ali Khan

He was one of the first rebellious freedom fighters of India. Peer Ali opposed the British rules in initial periods of the movement. Peer Ali Khan

Khan  was part of the 1857 freedom struggle and was capital punishment due to his role in the freedom movement.
