Six districts, most of them in northern Gujarat, witnessed sporadic incidents of violence against Hindi-speaking people. Mehsana and Sabarkantha were the worst-hit districts.
Gujarat has been on edge for the last few days with locals turning on migrants from UP, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh after the rape of a minor.
Reacting to the incidents of violence, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday said targeting of migrant workers in Gujarat is “completely wrong” and he is totally against it.
Taking to Twitter, he said the root cause of violence in Gujarat is the closure of factories and unemployment there due to which both the system and the economy are reeling.
“There is nothing more frightening than poverty. The root cause of the violence in Gujarat is the closed down factories and unemployment there. Both the system and that economy are reeling.
“Making migrant labour their target is completely wrong. I stand totally against it,” he said in Hindi on Twitter.

BJP Hits Back At Rahul Gandhi!
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Monday hit out at Rahul Gandhi for his tweet over the recent attacks on migrants in the state and blamed the Congress for inciting violence.
In a series of tweets, Rupani said, “Congress first incites violence against migrants. [Then] Congress president tweets to condemn this violence. Does the Congress president not have any shame?”

50,000 migrants flee, over 400 arrested: Why is Gujarat on edge?
According to news reports, more than 50,000 workers from UP, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh have already fled Gujarat fearing violence. Several videos circulated on social media where workers were seen being targeted also added to the atmosphere of fear.
It all began on September 28, when a 14-month-old girl in the Sabarkantha district of Gujarat was allegedly raped by a man from Bihar. The accused was arrested but the incident created outrage among a section of Gujaratis, who mobilised small mobs to attack unrelated migrant workers.
Mehsana and Sabarkantha are the worst-hit districts. The police department has also directed its officers to organise camps and communicate with local leaders..
