In a strange twist of fate, a 35-year-old man who allegedly raped and set a woman on fire died of burn injuries after the widow grabbed him while still ablaze in West Bengal’s Malda district, said police on 5 March 2019.
The woman told the police that the accused reached her house on Monday evening when she was alone. The man then allegedly raped the woman, who is a widow, before setting her on fire. The woman, however, grabbed him tightly while she was still on fire.
The woman, a widow, in her complaint to the police said that she was alone at home on Monday when the deceased barged in. She claims that he raped her and then set her ablaze.
I grabbed him tightly while I was on fire, she says. The woman is now under treatment at the Malda Medical College and Hospital with burn injuries on her face and hands, officials said.
Locals rushed to her house after noticing smoke from the house
Police said locals rushed to her house after noticing smoke emanating from there and found both of them on fire inside a room.
A jar of kerosene was also found in the room, officials said.
They took both of them to a local hospital from where they were referred to the Malda Medical College and Hospital. The man succumbed on Tuesday morning there, police said.
The woman lived at Subhas Colony under Manikchak police station limits. She has three daughters and her eldest daughter was married and lives elsewhere.
District superintendent of police (DCP) Arnab Ghosh told news agency PTI that the case is being investigated from all angles since some of the woman’s neighbours have claimed that the deceased visited her often.
