On 26 June, every year International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed to spread awareness about the extreme cultural and economic harm the trade is doing. It is also known as World Drugs Day.
Every year since 2000, United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) decides a theme for the campaign.
No one can ignore the fact that illicit drugs and their trafficking pose a large health threat to humanity. Its long term use can even cause poor health, contraction of diseases through needle sharing, poor self-hygiene, psychological illness, death from over dose etc. Therefore, this day also serves as an opportunity for Member Nations to reaffirm their support for UN Conventions that attempt to control the world’s drug supply.
International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking 2018: Theme
The theme of International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking 2018 is “Listen First – Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe.” which is a UNODC initiative to increase support for prevention of drug use that is based on science.
What is Drug Abuse?
Drug abuse or substance abuse refers to the use of certain chemicals for the purpose of creating pleasurable effects on the brain. When you’re addicted to drugs, you can’t resist the urge to use them, no matter how much harm the drugs may cause.
It isn’t about just heroin, cocaine, or other illegal drugs. You can get addicted to alcohol, nicotine, painkillers, and other legal substances.
Addiction vs. Abuse
Drug abuse is when you use legal or illegal substances in ways you shouldn’t. Addiction is when you can’t stop. Not when it puts your health in danger.
Categories of drugs commonly seen in drug abuse cases include:
* Legal, over-the-counter – Includes drugs like alcohol and cigarettes
* Legal, prescription – includes drugs like methadone, oxycodone and Zolpidem
* Chemical – includes drugs like inhalants
* Illegal – includes drugs like marijuana, opiates (like heroin), stimulants (like methamphetamines and cocaine) and hallucinogenics (like acid)
What is Illicit Drug Trafficking?
Do you know that trafficking of drug is an international illegal trade that involves the production, cultivation, dissemination and sale of substance which prohibited according to the basic laws? In order to study the menace of this The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) effectively monitor and research illegal international drug markets. The Northern trade routes and Balkan areas are the main drug trafficking areas that link Afghanistan to the massive market of other international drug markets in Eastern and Western Continents.
On #Worlddrugday , take a pledge to stay away from substance abuse.
